Movies and TV started with 4:3, then awhile back movies changed to shorter wider aspect ratios purely to differentiate itself from TV. Then TV and computers eventually followed suit. Then movies got even wider to differentiate more.
CinemaScope (Aspect Ratio 2.35:1 - 2.66:1) was invented in 1953.

Thanks for the correction/input. It’s true the super wide was introduced at that time, but many movies also used the taller 1.85:1 aspect ratio. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that after TV went 16:9 in the late 90s, there was a shift of less movies using 1.85 and more (maybe most) using 2.35 (sometimes with IMAX in addition).

the chinese get it. so many of their laptops ship 3:2 displays. they call it 'the golden ratio' in their marketing. currently looking at Chuwi CoreBook. they're cheap laptops, will give it a try but don't expect apple's build quality.

why can't thinkpad/lenovo get it right either...

Apple invented the 3:2 laptop in 2001. Most considered it to be decent, and it even ran Descent well. There, we've covered it.

3:2 isn’t the golden ratio though. The golden ratio is about 1.61:1.
3:2 equals 1.5:1.
16:10 equals 1.6:1 so that’s almost exactly the golden ratio, and maybe why Apple chose it.
(16:9 equals 1.77:1 FYI)
16:10 is much better than 16:9, but I still do like 3:2 even more.

what in their right mind does it people think 16:9/10 is what we need for a laptop? it's not like we watch movies on it for that. we got 100"+ TVs these days. no we read and write more text or see more of these tiktok videos nowdays on our laptops... just do the the right thing already. 3:2. even a 1:1 lol would be perfect. imagine all the extra battery juice you can add.

Except the MacBooks are not 16:9, they are already much closer to 3:2 already.

Aspect ratios:
Widescreen Film = 1.85:1
16:9 = 1.78:1
16:10 = 1.6:1
MacBook Pro M4 = 1.54:1
MacBook Air M4 = 1.538:1
3:2 = 1.5:1

How would that help anything?

If I'm working on video, a wider aspect is better for viewing the video content.

If I'm working on code, then I need at least 2 windows side by side. That requires a wider aspect.

Of course, all of this is moot because I'm going to plug into the 40" wide monitor at my desk 99% of the time, because that's what's really needed for serious work.
