Apple isn't taking pre-orders but other retailers are so who has ordered and where did they order from?

No pre-orders anywhere....

Perhaps some retail stores may take your money, and put you on a list and if they get some they may call you, but none thus far.

That's the definition of a pre-order.
Except for the taking of the money.

I've bought the last three iPads from the same place and now I've ordered the Air from them as well.
I might not get it on 11/1 but neither will 80% of the other customers that want one and I won't have to stand in line.

What is the place you did that at ?

That's an assumption. The iPad doesn't have touch id, so the bottle neck in the supply chain isn't there. I don't foresee there being a huge wits time for the iPads.

If I want it on Nov 1, I'll go stand in line. If I'm waiting for it to be delivered to me, I'll order from Apple at midnight Pacific, and I'm sure to get it before any online retail store's "preorders."

That's not a preorder. Its a reservation.

If the Air is going to be in 40 countries on 1 Nov, then there must be a pretty good supply to go around.

I didn't know I could preorder elsewhere. But I also have a few hundred dollars worth of Apple Gift Cards I've been saving up.

Do stores that have mini Apple Stores inside, like Best Buy, allow you to purchase with an Apple Gift Card? I live halfway between KC and STL so it's quite a distance to the nearest Apple Store. We really need one being a larger college town (Mizzou).

Apple only (online or Apple store).

edit: Nobody is offering pre-orders, as mentioned above it is more of a reservation.

I never understood the pre-order and line-waiters. It's not like these are going to run away and never return. They're for sale on the 1st. If I can't get one then, I'll get one on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 10th.

What's the hurry? It's not a race.

If there is a limited supply, it IS a race. IF they run out, we might be waiting until the 14th, or the 21st, or maybe even December. Pre-ordering eases my mind that I will get one in the first week, at the latest.

Of course, I don't feel like this about every product, but to me, iPads are special. It's the device I've been waiting twenty years for, ever since I first tried to read a book on a laptop, and wanted to take off the keyboard. I guess I'm still not over the excitement at finally getting what I wanted. :p
