I will bet you that your "computer engineer" never even cracked them open and actually looked at them internally, but if he did he actually found good cords or bought a branded cable at least like belkin or something similar.

Because ebay cables = open them up and i swear by anything, will not recommend you that because how they are actually so badly made. But if he did, he can't really be a computer engineer, i am not a computer engineer or anything like that, but i am used to open up electronics everyday and fix them.
Comparing ebay cables to branded cables are exactly what the price will give you, it's crap.

The warranty isn't valid if you stick a 3rd party charger/sync cable into your device that apple hasn't approved if it gets broken after that. I can guarantee you that, you would need to lie to the apple store and tell them that you didn't do anything like that before, so i guess you're one of them, right?

Actually within the process he destroyed two of the cables going through them. Are you doubting the degree? Good to know... Perhaps i should send you a copy of his acceptance letter or his exam marks or a copy of his degreE?

I just use the Extender from my MacBook Pro, it works identical to the one Apple sells online for $29 (the extender adds 6ft for a total of 9ft, thats plenty).

MC359

I use something simliar, but 2 prong thing from a tivo or receiver type thing. Standard round 2 prong plug. e.g. $1.24

Other times, I've used a standard female-male USB extension cable.
e.g. $1.22

No it's not "just a wire".

As i said in the post before you, open them up and look inside and you'll know exactly why they are not "just a wire". I mean, i do all kinds of fixing with iPhone repairs, but some of the cords from ebay are really horrible and i wouldn't wanna touch them with anything.

You can clearly see in some of the cables that they have been manually soldered, sometimes not so good...

While i agree that the apple cords are WAY overpriced, i would at least choose a branded cable like belkin or something similar that is a good known brand otherwise and not just any cheap ebay cable, $4 can cost you your whole phone if the solders are shorted out.. which is easily happening on such small contact paths when doing them manually as most people from hong kong/china do.
Yes, they are just a wire. There are no active electronics inside of a USB cable.

Belkin is not necessarily a quality brand.

Hand soldered is just as high quality as machine built, it's all in technique. We use plenty of hand built RF coax and multipin connector cables and they work just fine. It's a user quality... and quality products DO come out of china... see back of iPhone. Stop being a bigoted racist.

If the cable assy shorts, damage to handset is highly unlikely. The source of power is from the host, the power brick or the PC. If the power brick, then it has likely been tested for this scenario and will auto shutoff, or kill itself. If a PC, it depends, some Taiwanese boards don't have proper current limiting, others do. Best case, USB port shuts off with power surge warning. Worst case I can imagine, some combination of burning out the DC-DC switcher on your motherboard and tripping the current overload shutoff in your system's power supply.

LOL since when is stating where 99% of electronics are made being a "bigoted racist"? I fail to see the duragitory comment in the post...

So belkin anyone? griffin? Are these OK to use? Doesn't Apple sell belkin in their stores?

During what process?

Yes, i am doubting his judgement if they where cheap ebay cables.

Oh, i see already in your second comment that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Btw, i should add, i'm all in for the cheapest possible solution at all times, but sometimes you gotta see the truth.

Btw, apple sells belkin cables, therefor they are approved by apple.

Are you trying to compare cables made by you vs those cheap ebay cables? Ok, good to know. I rest my case ;)

Oh btw, if you get a short in a sync cable, even if the host(whatever feeds power to the sync cable) shuts off, you still most likely have a short going from the dock connector on your phone to the actual short. So, where does that take us?

You guys know what? If you really think those cheap ebay cables holds such a high quality as apples own cables, i sure want your judgement on some of the cables i have gotten off ebay. I'll take a picture and PM you two(3?) guys when i have updated this thread with fresh pics, and then let's see what you guys have to say about it. I'm not saying things for nothing, i'm just trying to protect your investment (iPhone) but it seems like you guys don't care and you will gladly lie to an apple store to get a replacement even if you are not doing it in an honest way.

What does that make me? Or you guys for that matter? A <what?> racist?

Sorry, but i'm just trying to help you out, not bring you down. It's not that hard to understand, no?

Who cares? It's digital. If it works, it works, if it doesn't it doesn't. At $2 each, if one breaks every once in a blue moon, who cares? You'd still be $26 ahead or whatever. Apple iPod cables are like Monster HDMI cables... RIP OFF unless its just laying around from an old iPod.

A) If it doesn't physically fit, don't shove it in so hard it breaks.

B) If there's an electrical issue, the phone won't charge and/or sync, and when you find out it doesn't work get a new one!

I bet you that my original iPod sync cables are in a lot worse shape than cheap ones off of Ebay, and they are OEM.

EDIT: They are original to the 4th gen iPod, 2nd Gen and before wouldn't work, since they are not dock connectors.

It seems like you don't get the point, 26 bucks ahead? Is that how you are thinking? The iPhone is worth 26 bucks? Wow..

So, can you explain to me what difference a digital device does here?

You know how apple cables fried on some MacBooks? they where original cables, even old sync cables for iphone/ipod has broken in such a manner that they also caught fire. And as you even admit your first cable is in a really bad condition. But that is after years of usage, compare that to ebay cables that are more likely to do such way before.

I am really stumped that some of you guys just don't wanna get it, now do you?

If you set yourself to just try to bring me down instead of listening, you would instantly understand that i am no trying to argue, but at the level you guys bring me down, i don't know what to do than to play along and see if you may get it eventually, but if you guys don't, then that's fine. it your device for all that money that you guys are ultimately using with a cheap cable that may have huge quality control problems, it's not me, so i'm not gonna end up being the one in loss sooner or later, it's you, and you. Just trying to help.

I bought my iPhone for $800, i wanna protect the device best as i could, but also as cheap as i can. While many of you use a contract so you don't feel all that money in your hand, therefor i can also understand that you guys don't really care about your device and just think "warranty" if it brakes even because it was your own god damn fault.

A). Seems like you have experience. If it's that bad i'd really worry about using them at all, lol.

B). Ok, i can buy that aslong as you tell apple that you used a 3rd party cable that isn't approved, then i'm fine with it, really. But both you and I know that you are not gonna be a good boy and tell them that. Stand up and take it like a man if you are set to go that way. No-one feels pity for those who uses their warranty in place of others just because they broke them themselves.

WHAT? Your post makes absolutely no sense. My iPhone isn't going to magically blow up if I use a third-party charger with it. I don't know what fantasy land you are living in, but I'm sure Apple loves it when you buy a $1.50 cable for $30. I would never do anything to endanger my iPhone, but using third party cables is not dangerous to it.

and those companies love people like you.

let me guess, you also spend $100+ on an HDMI cable from monster, right?

i've been using the same HDMI cable for 4 years on my TV, which i had bought from eBay for $2-3. no issues with sound, or video quality..

i've never had problems with cheap cables, whether it be HDMI cables, USB cables or knock off Apple cables.

I refuse to buy cheaply built HDMI cables- I buy Monoprice. I am dead serious when I say that they build the BEST quality cables I have EVER used. They are thick, bend correctly, have great connectors, they are just built well. And they cost like $6 for HDMI. They might not be the absolute cheapest, but their value is incredible.

Wow. All this attitude and argument over a stupid cable.

Get over it. There are far more important things in life to worry about.

Sheesh, some of you people really make me cringe over what you deem important enough to argue about. The quality of a cable? Ugh.

And for what its worth, I just got a cheap USB extension cable. Costs $1.99. Works great.

"so who purchased a longer cord.."

My mom did. Gave her my old 4, and she immediately bought a longer cable.

It's not an issue for me. At home I have a special Onkyo charging dock for my iPhone which connected to my Onkyo surround sound receiver. Whenever I'm at home my iPhone is plugged into that. With Wi- Fi sync I don't even have to disconnect it from that and connect to my Mac.

I'm going to be getting one, but for work... not home. Luckily so far my outlets are perfectly positioned so I can use the existing charging cables & USB Wall pieces w/o any issues, but at work it's just not long enough.

Normally I don't even need it at work, but sometimes I just feel like using Pandora (blocked for some reason) instead of Google Music so I have to break out an extension which doesn't seem to charge as fast.

Going to get a longer one for work that I can run through the cable guides on my desk and just leave it there since I have a few extra plugs available on my outlets or UPS.
