Think if they are going to take customers from spotify once their free trial is over, they need to get some of the big guns on board like The Beatles and Prince, they should also try to get Neil young's back catalogue back. I'm not sure if Taylor Swift alone would be enough to make that many people switch

    No, I don't think so.

You need to start thinking of music as Cable TV. Multiple brands, each with their own premium channel, each with their own programming, each charging you an additional fee atop the price of basic cable. Think of Apple Music as Time Warner Cable. Think of The Beatles as HBO and Prince as Showtime. That's where we're headed.

Forcing customers to pay $120 a year until the end of time to rent media is no different than Cable TV, it's the model the record companies are turning to in desperation. Since there is so little good new music being released, they have to figure out a new way to monetize the old stuff.

They'll probably get The Beatles' discography first, eventually.
