Someone on another list dug up an official Apple Canada pricelist from 1977

Apple II Complete Computer, with 4 KB RAM $1,400
Apple II Complete Computer, with 16 KB RAM $1,678
Apple II Complete Computer, with 48 KB RAM $2,638

44 KB RAM upgrade = $1,343

That's $30.50 per Kb, $31,232 per Mb

At that rate, a fully loaded 16 Gb G5 tower would cost (for the RAM alone)

<wait for it>

511

Million

Dollars

in 1977 dollars

Which is approximately

1

point

6

billion

2006 dollars

Now, don't let me hear you complain about the price of RAM today...;)

Thanks

Yep, memory used to be very expensive.

The most that I paid for memory was in the late 80's for a 96KB module for my HP-71.

Cost was $1,295 or $13,489 per MB.

...that's only 13.5 million per GB. What a bargin! ;)

Speaking of RAM, I wonder at what point the world's total RAM exceeded the 16 GB you can stuff in a G5 now. Probably more recently than many would expect... late '70's, maybe?

It makes you think...

...that in another thirty years, might we be stuffing terabytes of
RAM into our computers?!

If we follow the trend, it'll be petabytes.

Which will be required if you want to keep all of mad jew's posts in memory by then.
