I'm nowhere near rich and not very lazy either, I just like streamlined things that were built for specific tasks and situations. A laptop is like a Swiss army knife, it can do a zillion things but it's not optimized for any of them.

So you expect to type on a 10in device while laying on your back?? thumb typing on a 10in ipad? and for the record i type on my MBP while laying down all the time.. I either slid it up on my knees or I just type blindly...

And by they way my MBP is alumium and it still gets hot... and so was the first gen iphone and it still got hot...

And when you pull out you bluetooth keyboard... how will you orient your IPad on your lap?

You know what would be sweet though? using the ipad as a Bluetooth keyboard for a Imac or mac pro! Multitouch keyboard with almost keyboard like buttons... just lay that sucker down and type away...

ahhh maybe thats the use for it? Well no.. because BT will be crippled..

well mr smarty pants.....

a netbook is another word for ultra portable....which means nothing....it doesn't have to have multi tasking or usb ports....where you got this idea i have no idea....

its simply a portable device....to simplify tasks....so you can take out your clunky netbook on a plane or in bed and i will gladly use my SLIM and LIGHT i pad to do that task quicker because i dont have to load my os and fight with the keyboard and mouse.

People who carry laptops in bags aren´t idiots, don´t try to twist my words! But carrying iPad everywhere with you, so you can browse the web in coffee shops is pretty lame to me. Just get the iPhone for that! You´ll get a phone and videocam and so on...

You are free to do whatever you want, even buy an iPad for couch surfing. And that´s pretty much all it´s good for. 499-829$ this is insanity in my book (unless again, if that´s pocket change to you to throw away). You can do that couch surfing perfectly well with iPhone or a MacBook too and both of those devices will do more other things much more valuable, what the iPad just can´t.

The iPhone is quite almighty indeed, you have to admit it! 😉

First off, this 100% speculation as I have obviously not used it on the iPad, BUT... assuming Dragon speech to text works on the iPad, I won't need a keyboard for my things such as replying to this forum thread. Talk, copy, paste done. I use Dragon Speech app on my iPhone for any email responses, some sms if it's longer than a word or two and find it very handy for most of my typing needs.

When I actually have to write a proposal or something I'll not likely be laying in bed or on the couch but in chair or a desk. I surf, watch video a ton when I goto bed and probably don't type 10 words over the course of a few hours till I fall asleep.

Just a thought 🙂
 
My thoughts...first I'll be buying one. A 64 gig Wifi model as soon as I can in March.

I think people need to stop saying "it's not a computer." Yes, it is. So are the iPhone and iPod touch. People need to let go of the traditional desktop computer/file system approach. It's needed and appropriate for a desktop computer / laptop. Not for a device in this class.

As to what I'll use it for:

1) I currently carry a notepad (~9"-12") in a leather binder to all of my meetings. I can now replace that with this which will allow me to handwrite or type notes, and my data can be searchable.

2) I work in IT. VNC and RDP clients on this will be much more useful than they are on my iPhone screen.

3) I rip my DVDs to H.264 with handbrake for AppleTV and can now transfer them via iTunes to this device for viewing without iTunes having to convert the video first and creating another file.

4) The screen and battery life makes watching this content that much better on the go or wherever I may be.

5) Perfect Vacation computer, I don't have to take my Macbook Pro with me to Disney World in June. I can offload my digital photos to it, have access to wifi, email, web browsing, upload to my mobile Me gallery, everything I'll need, sans iChat video conferencing.

6) Mobile iWork with video out @ 1024 x 768.

7) Perfect portable sketch pad, paired with a Pogo Stylus. Said Pogo Stylus will also be doing the handwritten notes if I chose to go that route. I won't have crazy Wacom 1024 levels of sensitivity or tilt but, that's fine for me.

8) I wanted a kindle for eBooks. Don't need one now.

9) I wanted a digital photo frame for my desk at work. Don't need one now.

10) Gaming. No more expensive $40.00 DS and PSP titles for me.

I would have liked a webcam. Maybe bluetooth or via the dock we'll see one, or version 2 of the iPad. I think we'll see Multitasking in iPhone OS 4. I can see how people are upset with lack of multitasking on the thing at the moment, but for me it's not a deal breaker.

Flash and some kind of Netflix streaming would be awesome, but that's all software and can change at any time.

The App store way of installing and managing software is really fantastic and makes it a lot more simple than downloading and mounting .dmg files for mom and pop. Yes, it's a downer that Apple has to approve apps, but it is a bit of quality control and there is truly an "App for that". I'm excited to see the new round of Apps that developers will amaze us with and what OS 4.0 will bring.

At the price for the device, it's a no brainer.

And yes, I have a Netbook. An MSI wind. I tried "hackintosh". The screen sucks, the webcam is laggy (under OS X), no multitouch....it has Windows 7 on it now which is....meh. I tried using it for meetings and such, I hated it.

You mean like how I type on a 3.2" device while lying on my back? The keyboard on the iPad is much larger. I can type on my iPhone (or similar device) just fine. I don't see how that is going to be any worse on the iPad.

Your MBP is running an Intel Dual Core processor. The iPad is running a 1Ghz CPU made for this device. The first gen iPhone is small in comparison to the iPad. There was less surface area for the heat to be dissipated.

I don't put my current laptop on my lap. I use on for these: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80115790

So, the iPad will sit in the dock on this laptop cushion just like my Air is right now.

That would not be sweet, and I don't see what that has to do with the BT being crippled. You don't even need to use Bluetooth, there are remote mouse apps that work over WiFi right now. An App to do this could easily be created using WiFi.

But why would you want to use a machine that is consuming too much power for something that shouldn't use a lot of power? The iPad is the right size for surfing the web, listening to music, emails, etc...without the unnecessary power consumption.

The iPhone is too small to do these things comfortably for long periods of time (not just dropping a deuce while surfing the web)...the iPad is convenient enough...carry it like you would with a book...In a backpack, under you arm pit (or forearm), etc....

I already have the effing iPhone and an iPod Touch too, do you think I would be the least interested in the iPad if I was satisfied with the iPhone surfing experience?

Yes, it's a hell of a lot better than surfing on some crappy SonyEricsson with a tablet pen, it's the best possible browsing experience you could ever hope to squeeze into a screen that small, but it's still awkward. You zoom and you pinch and you click and you scroll and you click accidentally, you can never see an entire page at once because the characters will be smaller than the pixels. You spend 10% of the time actually reading anything, and 90% of the time manipulating the content. So what could you possibly have against a giant iPhone (you appear to love the iPhone, after all) where you can change that ratio from 10/90 to 90/10?
 
If they moved all the functionality of the Tenori-on into an iPad app, I could replace it too. Didn't even think of that one!
 
I'll be getting one because in spite of all the negative criticism, it's still a cool gadget. It's not gonna replace my current Apple toys, but for 500 bucks, you can't go wrong. It's dirt cheap!

Clearly the money is a factor for you based on how you perceive the uses or lack of uses on the iPad. $499 is a couple nights out on the town for some people, hell probably a good night of drinking for many people lol. This is not some major purchase for most people that already own two or three thousand dollars worth of Apple gear. (iPhone, MBP, iMac's)

I consider most of the gadgets I own nothing more than a toy to entertain me, this will be yet another. I'll likely have a pair to buy when they come out as the wife has already shown her interest as it would easily suit her computing needs which consist mainly of email and surfing the web. Netbooks she has tried all were returned as they are crap. She tried the MBA and was happy with it until the hinge decided to fall apart, it was repaired and sold before it happens again. The iPad will cover all the computing power she needs, and millions of people will find it more than enough for what they use a compute for.

Take out all the tech geeks and nerds on all the tech forums and blogs because none of us count in the big picture so that argument is dead. Apple is thinking big picture, who will buy this, and they put out a product at a price point that will sell like crazy. No one cares if I personally will buy it, and no one cares if you do either.

Where I got the idea is that for the last 24 months... the netbook name was describing a ULTRA PORTABLE COMPUTER... and what does a computer do?? I has I/O and and a OS to do multiple task....

Steve JObs.. said the ipad was the solution to the netbook niche...

Since the Ipad cannot do HALF of what a netbook can do... that makes steve look ridiculous.. along with yourself for claiming multitasking doesnt make a ultraportable lol

and are you suggesting that a 10in netbook is not thin and light??

I was a ipad hater @ first, but that pic gave me hope.

Hopefully apple/iPad App developers, get serious with more music and audio editing apps!

Oops. Missed this ridiculous post.

Read this carefully. I do not want to browse the web on 3.2" screen for long periods of time. I don't want the crappy camera and videocamera.

There is nothing of value a Macbook Pro or iPhone have over the iPad for my situation. Read that carefully: My Situation. Not your situation, mine. Take your suggestions which are based on your reality and shove them up your behind. You have made your point. Please move on.

It will have monthly payment involved, if you want 3G. And I will assume according to your post that you will not get the 3G model. And I will assume then that you don´t have a Mac or a PC at home, ´cause you need the iPad to browse the web right?

Oh wait! You have to buy a computer with the iPad, ´cause it won´t work as a standalone device! 😉 Hahaha!

And why would you buy this to be used at home, if you already have a computer there? Ah I forgot the lazy couch surfing! And throw that much money away only for that task, you must be rich!

Has anyone ever called you ignorant?

I do have macbook, it's just to cumbersome to take with me to school, open it up, let it boot up, etc etc...versus the iPad which is 3-4 pounds lighter than my macbook, instant on (from wake), and has 5x longer battery life. I'm not saying I'm gonna get rid of my Macbook. I'm just gonna use something that's more convenient for on the go...

also, stop judging people that like the iPad...you have no right to judge anyone...not every piece of technology that's right for you would be right for me...I'm not judging you am i? don't judge me, or the rest of the people who like certain things that you might not agree with.

I have yet to see a video where you thumb type like on a 3.2in Iphone... Maybe if you had GIGTANTIC hands... but i dont think the typing experience would be the same as a iphone... you adding 1.1in diagonally in all directions

lol this is me.. I own each one (and a nano 😱 ) to me this is an iTouch (sorry iPod touch lol) on steroids... nothing more.. As much as I would love to get one I will wait a few months (maybe 1 year) to see what future models offer... if anything.
