What purpose do they serve?

For example, if your runners (ie: my New Balance) are dirty and I don't wash them, my white socks become dark brown after I wear my shoes for 1 hour. After that, I may as well stick my foot in the shoe directly.

Only time I can see socks serving a purpose is when you're wearing black formal shoes, which always seem to be slippery and uncomfortable inside.

My friend doesn't wear socks with some of his shoes. Well, not always. There are some shoes he's perfectly happy wearing without socks. I know his sock-habit probably doesn't have anything to do with him being gay, but......yes, I think it's because he's gay. :p

I think I'll stick with socks just to conform, but sometimes I can totally see socks being a bit unnecessary.

(it's a pointless thread, but I've been sitting at my office at uni and this is what happens when I need to learn how to program simulations)

Socks help keep feet warm and cool. Dry. Can help act as buffers so you don't get blisters.

Er. Fashion statement, too. Some people have really fun patterns and prints on their socks. :D

They soak up the sweet to keep your feet dry.

They have snoopy on them.

They have cool animation.

They hide ugly peoples toes. ( very important) :p

Socks are just all round types of cool.

Chafing.

And preventing you from sweating directly into the shoe which would cause mold or other gross-ness. Your socks are washable. :)

Devilot summed up the two most important points: keeping you warm and avoiding blisters (imagine jogging or playing soccer without socks!)

They are also a great way to entertain the little ones with a muppet show when you are out of ideas :)

Ties, on the other hand... useless!

But many of todays sports shoes are so breathable, and yet we wear a layer of socks underneath? I know there are quick drying socks that "wick" moisture, but they're not nearly as efficient as the shoe itself. They really should just make the bottom padded bit easily removable and washable.

I wash my shoes anyway. People think it's weird, but I don't care.

Don't get me started!

Cuff-links = more useless.
Those clips that you clip onto ties = most useless. They clip onto a useless product --- an accessory used on an accessory.

I want some animated socks :) ;)

I have socks that have a place for each toe. It's like wearing gloves on your feet rather than mittens!

They also have faces on them. Their facial features (ie: eyes, nose, ears, mouth) are made up of Japanese "letters". The pack came with 3 pairs of socks. One pair has a face on it and is to be worn when I've been good, another pair with a face on them for when I was bad, and a 3rd pair that says "Konnichi wa" on them! :p

I've forgotten to bring regular socks to practice a few times (I wear nice warm wool or thick cotton socks when it's chilly out- i.e. under 20F), and my feet invariably get blisters.

So yea, as has been said, warmth and blister-prevention.

During the summer when I'm not playing a sport I basically never wear socks since I'm always wearing sandals.but socks are quite useful with regular shoes.

Well, ankle socks would be OK.. the kind that BARELY peek out from the edge of the shoe.

It's just socks and sandals you have to worry about.

agreed. i actually don't have any regular socks anymore as i wear low-rise socks + shorts most of the time.

socks + sandals = uber trashy

Well after suffering through several hours of mental torture, I have finally found the purpose for ties: They cover up the buttons on the front of the shirt!

Now someone tell me what cufflinks are for, or those $70-100 clips that clip onto ties. They're even more expensive than the tie itself! I've rarely ever seen them worn.

The wearing of any socks with shorts is just wrong.

I don't understand why people do it.

Same with socks + some types of shoes, of course. :p Yes, they prevent blisters in some shoes, but if we can send a man to the moon, surely we can put a soft, less abrasive material in shoes to make wearing them sockless a bit better. How breathable would a pair of New Balance sockless shoes be!

Have you ever worn a tie and bent over a sink to wash your hands? ...Or even worse bent over a shredder? :p
