Software for converting .dat to .jpg?

What is a .dat file? It's generally used as a generic extension but if you're seeing it for a specific application please give more information.

Is .dat a raw camera file format? Like the .nef extension for the D90? Or is it a proprietary format from a program?
Although if it were a raw format i would imaging OSX would read it natively. If not you could use Bridge and/or Photoshop. But if it's a proprietary format you'll need to discover the tool they use to make them.
