I use window's computers and Mac's. I have several 3.5 inch hard drives that I had in a nas device formatted for mac. I now want to install these inside my window's tower. what is a good software that I can use to format these drives? I've tried using OS-X to format in FAT and then format with window's but all previous partitions remain. is there a standalone software that would do a better job?

Repartition in OSX then format to the file system you want making sure to choose MBR as the partition scheme in the Options button selection you have at the bottom of that window or Disk Management I think is called in windows select the drives and delete the former partitions then recreate as you want them.

Formatting with Windows would be best. I still don't trust my Macs to format anything NTFS or FAT.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that's been there :) I've had to use gparted way too many times as penance for trying.
