Software for ripping - handbrake crashes

Hi.
I want to rip my dvd's for watching on the iPad. I used to use handbrrake, but now it crashes all the time, and seem to be unable to handle the protection on the discs.
Is this a common problem with handbrake and are there any other free or cheap alternatives to Handbrake?

You could use something else for ripping and leave only the conversion to HandBrake.
MakeMKV is one of the capable rippers, that works also on a Mac. But there are others as well.
