Software Unlock for OS3.0

Hi I am running Iphone 3G 2.2.1 with a piggy back sim which works about 95% of the time.

I have been told that OS3.0 can be unlocked (I am not interested in jailbreak) by software only.

Anyone know if this is correct

You will need to Jailbreak to install yellowsn0w (the software unlock) however.
