Does it do it in another user's account or the GUEST account? Try repairing Disk Permissions (if you haven't already).

Aea macrumors 6502a Original poster Sep 9, 2008 #5 Repair did nothing. My "Solution" sudo sh softwareupdate -i -a Hopefully once it's installed I'll be able to run software update normally without resorting to terminal.
