should we expect a unifying software update for the Apple TV 3 tomorrow that will bring visual updates to match the look and feel of tvOS of the new Apple TV 4?

i didnt ask for the features of apple tv 4 , i asked if they will updat the UI with new icons and the fresh interface of tvOS.

You would hope so - if not tomorrow some time soon

Apple have always allowed old devices to run current look and feel as long as the hardware can cope

Theoretically yes it could hardware wise. But economically, they probably already know people would pay money to have a new look and feel for something. I mean look at the iPhone 6s vs the 6. It'd be great if they did do it, but I just don't see that happening for the 3rd Gen Apple TV. They pulled the same sh*t with the 2nd Gen Apple TV Interface (even though it might've been a hardware limitation idk)

Obviously not the functionality but I would expect some sort visual update to the UI. Not thinking it even can run the new OS.

thats a horrible example, the iphone 6s has many advantages over the 6 and the reason people buy it is not because of the "UI", its got double the ram, New touch screen technology (3D Touch) and a faster processor, thats much more than just a "UI" Upgrade

I updated my post to clarify, as I didn't really think it was a good example myself tbh. What I said about the 2nd Gen Apple TV could be something to think about though. The UI did not change even though they had a few updates for new channels or bug fixes.

wait, does the Apple TV 2 have the sam interface as the Apple TV 3? maybe that can be an indicator for us if they keep previous gen UI updated or not. i only have an apple tv 3 so i cant compare it with the UI of the apple TV 2 (running latest firmware of course)

No, what I'm saying is that the 2nd Gen Apple TV DOES NOT have the same interface as the 3rd Gen. It has an older one. One they have not updated visually since the launch of the 3rd Gen Apple TV.

Source: I had one (2nd Gen) until I sold it before the announced the shipping dates for the 4th Gen Apple TV

thats bad news then, it means they wont update the apple tv 3's interface either with the updated UI of the apple tv 4

Yep, it's more than likely that they won't unfortunately. It kind of makes since though since a hardware limitation is at play again.

Did you read the article !

Quote:

"This isn't to say that the third-generation Apple TV won't receive ANY softwareupdate (with Apple Music goodness) to make it look more like its sibling when the new set top box comes out later this year—I expect that. But if you were hoping to play with tvOS on your existing box, or buy a cheap test unit, you're sadly out of luck."

O and ATV 2 has same interface as ATV 3

i doubt there is a hardware limitation in updating the icons of the mainscreen perhaps?
Also,

There's no Apple Music under 3rd Gen, yet they EXPLICITLY state it under the Apple TV 4th Gen

ha! good catch, i guess we should forget about that coming for the atv 3 as well as the UI Updates. they clearly want to sell the atv 4 and use any possible way to do it.

Thanks lol. Yep, that's Apple for you. (Unfortunately)

Sadly, I think there is a hardware limitation somewhere, thought I'm not sure exactly where. My guess is that even while trying to code all of that stuff differently to work with the old Apple TV remote and removing the parallax effects was still an issue with designing the new ui interface to work with the Apple A5 chip. That or they just thought it'd be a waste of time money wise. The marginal input vs marginal cost if you will. (Again, I'm not trying to be negative in any way, just trying to explain sort of the same situation I was in a few years ago)

agreed, could be a limitation in ram or just overall processing power that the A5 is not capable of handling the new interface, such a shame but i guess it is what it is.

one question, the new apple tv 4 can be controlled with a harmony remote ?(IR) , because i read the new apple tv 4 remote uses bluetooth and my harmony remote is only IR
