Is your internet connection fine and can you download updates from the Apple site manually at the moment? Have you tried stopping it, removing com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist from the Preferences folder, and trying again? 🙂

I'm seeing the same thing on my macbook 2ghz. It started recently because I was able to download the EFI firmware and X11 updates a week or so ago. It doesn't seem to run at the command line either.
It works fine on my mac pro. I didn't yet install the firmware update on that. not sure if that's got anything to do with it
Update: The command line version did finally say no updates were available. I didn't time it but it took quite a while.
the same thing is happening... i tried deleting the .plist files and nothing happens.. 😕
i tried to repair permissions and when i open it it also hangs and it says... gathering disk information with the spinny wheel.....
i think my computer is about to blow up... o what fun!
