Software Update issues?

Lately I've had a ton of trouble with software updates not wanting to install. The d/l goes fine and the computer restarts, but then it just sits there on "configuring installation" forever and doesn't get anywhere. This is on a Mac Mini 1.83 C2D. Haven't tried an update on my macbook yet. Any ideas?
