Ok so I just picked up a new aluminum macbook and was running software update. THere were several updates that needed to be made so I downloaded all and then clicked the reset computer button. Finder disappeared and it ran a bar that said configuring installation or whatever, this went for 30-45 minutes nothing is changing in progress so I force shutdown and restarted the computer and tried it again, I left the computer for 4 hours this time... Same thing.

I force shut down again and then installed all updates not requiring a reset. They all worked fine and then I tried installing updates that needed reset, the are

OSX 10.5.6 and
Digital Raw Camera 2.4

When I tried installing them I have the same issue. What is wrong with my BRAND NEW computer?

Update: I tried them both alone. Digital Raw camera went through fine but 10.5.6 froze the computer again. How can I delete the download I made earlier and do it again, I assume that the download is somehow corrupt

Whenever there is a difficulty with an OSX update when run through Software Update, the simplest solution is to go directly to the Downloads section on the Apple website to download the "combo" updater for whatever revision you are trying to fix/reinstall. When you run the updater through Software Update (which normally but not always works fine) it will download one version if you are just moving up one point (for example 10.5.5 to 10.5.6) and another (the combo) if you are moving up more than one point.

Using the combo (even if you are only moving up one point) to retry often straightens out problems that may result from the single point (or "delta") updater files. I have gotten to the point (after a couple of minor delta problems) of just grabbing the combo updater each time and not using the one in Software Update myself.

Anyhow, the 10.5.6 combo updater can be downloaded here and you may well find that running it will get you back up to speed in short order. And you don't have to remove any files for this to work BTW since the combo updater is a completely different file from the one that you used through Software Update. Have patience when downloading-- the combo in this case is 668Mb compared to the 372Mb or less on the version Software Update uses! ;)
