Hi all,

My first post in this forum, but I used to post a bit on the iPhone forum before.

I recently bought a used white MB, the 2.1GHz C2D model, 2GB RAM and unfortunately a combo drive (although I can't remember when, if ever, I burned a DVD on my laptop). The machine was bought to find out if I should make a switch to OS X, and the answer is a resounding YES!!! 🙂

My first question here relates to the software update feature (accessed from the Apple menu in the menu bar). How reliable is it - i.e. if I use that, do I ever need to check the downloads section at apple.com? I ask because today (browsing this forum) I found out that there is a beta of Safari, which software update told me nothing about.

What's the verdict?

Thanks, and I look forward to participating here!

Software Update is very reliable. The Safari 4 Beta isn't an update yet. It's still in Beta, so it's optional. The Downloads section of the Apple site is for all kinds of downloads, including 3rd party applications. It's not the same as updating your OS.

Thanks for a quick reply!
