I recently bought a used iMac which had quite a bit of software on it, mostly the kinds of stuff that you find bundled with it, such as iWork... iPhoto.. etc.. however when I try to update things like iPhoto (which must be updated since I upgraded to Mavericks and now it doesn't work anymore) it looks for the original owner's apple ID and password, and won't let me substitute for my own. What gives? Is there a solution to this problem?

Somewhere!
You will need to start over fresh. Did the iMac come with any disc? What year is the iMac? Need some specs to give people around here an idea of what iMac you have.

Not trying to sound harsh. But you will need to completely wipe the iMac and start over fresh. As long as it is tied to the previous owners ID you are going to have problems.

Can you contact the previous owner? Maybe ask them for the disc if it came with them.
