Software Updates

I have a question about software updates

When I perform the software updates, my MBP downloads the necessary files. It unpacks and installs...then my computer restarts and stuff...

I was wondering if these downloaded files will clutter deep in the harddrive. If so, then all of my previous updated files will be located somewhere in my harddrive right?
Won't that eat up some unnecessary space?

I believe everything is installed in /Library/Receipts

I would not remove anything though.

Also, if you remove the reciepts, then permissions can not be reapaired:

I'd look elsewhere if you need to free space.
