I haven't used Mail and mostly I don't use most of iLife except for occasionally using iDVD. Image Capture has never done a thing for me because I use Photoshop for scanning. Similarly, iPhoto is completely useless to me--it actually does bad things to my photos so I don't want to mess with it.

However, with everything, the applications are small enough that they don't make a lot of difference if they're gone. It's the data that takes too much space.

Wow...Sherlock is my friend but apparently no one else likes it. No one needs help with other languages?

Do you have a hard drive full of programs you never use?

So I was looking at how much hard drive space I had left on my 12" PB. I have been doing some video and have pretty much tapped both my internal and external hard drives and need to clear off some space.

I noticed I have a lot of applications on my 'puter that I have never used, but I haven't gotten the nerve to delete on the offhand chance that I might need them. It is mostly image software, but there are a few other things like my copy of Macromedia Studio MX that I was going to learn how to use.

So what's on your computer that you could probably be rid of?
Um....
Adobe Reader, AIM, Appleworks, ArtRage 2 Free, Brightness Control, Chess, CSSEdit, Dictionary, DNS Update, DVD Player, Eigenmath, Flock, Handbrake Lite, iCal, iChat, iDVD, iMovie, Kodak Easyshare, Mail, Mousepose, Nanosaur 2, Opera, Poster Paint, Seashore, Sherlock, Shiira, Stickies, Transmission, Tux Paint.

Yep. I did just go through my total Apps folder. :D

Wow! I didn't intend to start a house cleaning thread!

Got iWork '06 for Keynote and thought I would give Pages a try, just never have. A curious thing happened when I intalled Keynote 3. It did not remove Keynote 1.1. So I wonder how many extra files I have laying around that I don't need.

Hmmmf..
Final Cut Express as I have FCP.
FireWorks
Sherlock
iDVD
iMovie
GarageBand
Automator
Chess
Dictionary
iCal
image Capture
Internet Connect
Stickies
Netscape
yahoo messenger
MSN messenger
Skype
GoLive
InDesign.

I have a lot of apps I don't use.

iDVD, my computer doesn't even have a DVD burner.
Zinio, WTF is this? I opened it and it just crashed so I deleted it anyway.
Sherlock
Pages
Microsoft Intarojje
Stickies

EDIT: Forgot Appleworks, Chess, Marble Blast Gold, Nanosaur 2, & Deimos Rising

Don't use Sherlock.

I actually only use iTunes, Safari, and iChat. Stickies sometimes. The other stuff I use when I need it, and that's it.

I have 74 items in my Applications folder (though certain things, like the FC Suite, I've consolidated into folders), and I use every one of them quite often.

Don't want to sound like a fanboy, but the only thing I don't see myself opening that much is iPhoto, as I usually just import with Image Capture and edit what I want to with Photoshop.

Seems like most people stay away from iMovie and iDVD....I'm into video, and even though I use FCP, it can be really bloated for just reviewing video or importing stuff, so I'll just use iMovie. DVD Studio is a waste of time for everyday DVD burning, so I'll just use iDVD.

I also got rid of Garageband because Soundtrack came with more loops and is better integrated with FCP.

Deleting an iApp might cause slowness

The funny thing about the iMovie, iDVD, etc, is that iTunes and iPhoto will run slower if you have never run iMovie and iDVD. It even says so in Apple's support pages, although I'm too lazy to look it up for you. Anyway, I'm guessing that since that's true, then if you DELETE iMovie and iDVD, you'll make iPhoto slower. Not sure about Garageband, but the way it used to be is that if you had iLife on your computer, it was new, and you never opened iPhoto before, then iMovie would run slower because of how integrated the software is. iMovie will always try to make a connection with the other iApps when you open it because you can add photos, music, and make DVDs from iMovie, and if you've never opened iPhoto, iTunes, or iDVD ever before, then it can't make that connection necessary for iMovie to say, "Oh, there they are!!" You need to open all 4 iApps at least once when you first get your computer.

Again, it even says so in Apple's support pages, or at least it used to. I'm not sure if it still works that way, but unless Apple rewrote all 4 programs from the ground up and changed that part of all the apps, things probably still work that way.

My guess is that if you delete something, you'll make the other parts of iLife a bit slower, but I can't say that for a fact because I'm not certain.

I find it astonishing that so many people don't use iMovie. Are you using another video app, or do you simply not have video cameras?

Given how easy iLife '06 made podcasting, using GarageBand, you'd think more people would use it. Granted, I play keyboard and find GarageBand's simplicity to be refreshing.

I'd sorta like to play with iMovie, but the only video camera we own is an older VHS-C camcorder. I also have the feeling that my 1GHz TiBook would burst into flames if I did actually try to feed it a digital video stream.

Someday, if a few thousand free dollars fall into my lap, I might buy a newer video camera and a powerful-enough Mac to be able to use iMovie. ;)
