Sorry, should have added more details. I had it on an 18 month contract which ran out two months ago, changed to simplicity.
I can't understand how/why o2 would block the phone within 24 hours of it being sent and received.

So it must be something she's doing.

Fair enough, it's yours to do as you wish then

I'd still give them (O2) a ring, or better still e-mail them then you will have a written response which you can upload to your PayPal dispute, although that may ake time for them to respond...

She has to connect it to iTunes to activate or it won't have a signal. Even if it's on the same network.

Of course if it another sim card she is using different to o2 then it won't have a signal as it is still locked.

You would hope that they did that in the phone shop...but god knows with the idiots working in most of them!

Yeah I can't see it being blocked, but from her messages, she doesn't have much of a clue. First it was 'barred' then 'blocked'. It isn't blocked, merely locked into o2 and she probably hasn't activated it.

I've told her to try through iTunes and activate, and I'll contact o2 tomorrow to see if there is anything else (incase iTunes doesn't work).
However, I am only going to be helpful up to a point, the phone is as described and by her own words 'in full working condition'.

Lol what a dumb scag if she hasn't plugged it into iTunes yet she doesn't deserve an iPhone. Stupid people are incredible.

Got a message this morning. She hasn't plugged it into iTunes and the phone shop did not suggest it either.

Lol  I recently sold my 3G on eBay as well, The buyer said he was 'testing' it over a week ago, something seems fishy about him  No feedback left yet. :(

Well if you posted her message via copy paste she doesn't seem too bright to begin with. Good luck iPaddy.

Yep, copied and pasted. Thanks, hopefully she'll manage it.
Either way, far too excited for iPhone 4 to care.

If the phone is on contract I believe O2 (all carriers for that matter) can block it if another SIM card and account is used in the handset, as technically the phone is still owned by O2 although it's rare..

Just to clarify this point, in the case of iPhone contracts with O2, you ARE the owner of the iPhone as soon as you accept delivery -they make a point of stating this in their terms & conditions/contract. Let's just say that i've 'been there and done that', they insist upon the customer becoming the owner as this removes their 'liability' for it.

Anyway, to the OP, don't rush into making any decisions (like accepting a return from this buyer), just stay calm and talk her through the process of setting up the iPhone -it seems that she doesn't have a clue how to do it.

So, in anticipation of the iPhone 4 launch, decided to sell my iPhone 3G on eBay. It sold on Thursday night for £200, sent immediately on Friday, received this morning.
Got a positive feedback for the transaction, which meant the money was released and I've transferred to my bank account.
Six hours later I've received a message from the buyer saying she wants a refund because the phone is 'barred'.

She bought the phone for fathers day, so doesn't sound too tech clued up, but I'm now trying to think if I've done something that won't let it work for her.

I went under general settings in the phone and erased all data, packed it and sent it.

Any ideas?

Keep the email very business like and use the eBay email system to communicate with the buy. Stay calm and ask her what the problem is. It sounds like YOU have done everything right and with luck you will be able to straighten this out with the buyer and keep it from going and farther.

She's just sent this message:

Sorry i mean when put my o2 sim card in da phone said no signal i took it 2 a phone shop and they tried anutha sim in there and it said the same thing no signal they told me the phone is blocked and i was advised to send it back as it cannot b unlocked i am soo sorry but everythink else is working fine its just not excepting sim cards again i am sorry

Any ideas?

i had a 3g in my possesion that would do this as well, i inserted an att sim and it wouldnt get signal (it wasnt unlocked either), so what i did was activate it with my sim and all of the sudden it started accepting the other att sim.

tell her to try and activate it?

All sorted, her o2 sim was dead.
Shes apologised at least.
Now to get the new iPhone.

fair enough, I was going by what Orange had told me...i've never actually read the T&Cs ...

You would have thought the phone shop would have tried another SIM, even if they just threw one in there to test it for a second.

...and people wonder why no one on these boards takes the word of AT&T employees and others. Because they're CLUELESS!!
