since its a 3g send him download links for firmwares required to redsn0w it, then tell him to use ultrasn0w

I'd be really careful about getting a prepaid SIM card for someone else. Since 9/11 most countries have laws (they have been pressured by the US to do this) requiring ID to get a SIM card. If you get the card and are required to associate this card with yourself, don't do it!!! These cards can end up in the hands of a terrorist and suddenly you are associated with their activities. They use them to make "anonymous" phone calls and can even use them as a triggering device in a bomb. I guess if you really can buy one with a fake name and pay cash for it, then go for it to help the guy out.....otherwise I wouldn't get involved.

I've bought cards in foreign countries as I've traveled around and have usually had to show my passport as ID to get the card....not worried since it's for my personal use. I was told that the Swiss were particularly unhappy about the registration requirement as they are famous for protecting privacy, but gave into US pressure.

After Googling and finding some of the articles above, I may have some of the facts wrong....but nonetheless I wouldn't get involved with getting someone else a SIM card.

If it's a 3G, he can easily jailbreak and unlock it. That way he can use a Belgian sim, just send him these instructions.

By doing this, he can use 4.0 and be unlocked to work in Europe.

Good advice. I really don't see how providing him a pre-paid U.S. AT&T card will benefit him in Europe, at least in any legitimate way.

why you are even worrying about buying him things after you sold him a phone is dumb. he should have looked into what he was buying before he bought. not your fault

It's scary to think the restore doesn't erase everything too. I have mine on eBay now. Ending soon. I didn't note no sim card. Two watchers no bids. I may cancel it. I'm afraid if apple can't fix proximity sensor issue I will sadly have to return this. It's a shame they won't make a statement.

you mean the proximity sensor issue that a very small percentage of iPhone 4 owners have, clearly meaning it will either be fixed through software or Apple will replace it for you if you take it to the genius bar?

I wouldn't get too worried about that...it's blown way out of proportion

Thanks everyone, I think I will go ahead and recommend to him that he try to unlock it before I buy him a sim card.

I really do have to say caveat emptor. You listed everything you needed to list before you put up the phone it seems, sold it "as is" and if it doesn't work in Belgium or needs a sim card or anything else, that isn't your responsibility. You really have to do your homework before buying a used iPhone. So many things to consider and it is the buyer's job to ask all the necessary questions before bidding. I have been there before and please know that I am aware of where the line lies.

Things buyers have to ask before buying or else risk getting stuck with a lemon in their corner of the world: what is the frequency the phone operates on, what version of the firmware is it running, is it jailbroken and was the SHSH file backed up before jailbreaking, what was used to jailbreak the phone, what accessories come with the phone. Those are just a few. Then there is the question of whether the phone can be unlocked after it's jailbroken. Whew! I have not seen all of those questions answered in the average e-Bay sale ad by the seller and I frequently see "Ask questions about this phone BEFORE you bid on it, all sales are FINAL and the phone is sold as is."

I think you are being a super nice guy.
