Regardless, PayPal immediately withdrew the funds directly from my linked checking account without any explicit authorization from me
That's why you don't have your real checking account linked to your paypal account. You open a separate checking account for your paypal transactions and as soon as the money hits the checking account, you transfer it to your real checking account.

Glad it went okay in the end OP, I just hope the guy didn't swap out parts or anything...

Okay...so I received the iPhone back today (just now actually). It is my iPhone. IMEI and serial numbers match. I turned it on, popped in a SIM card and it walked me through set up like normal. The iPhone is NOT activation locked. It never asked me for a password at all when I was setting it up. It doesn't look like it's been tampered with in any way at all. So...I don't know. Now the only thing I can think of is either: 1. this person was a scammer and figured out I kind of knew what I was talking about or 2. buyers remorse and since I don't accept returns made up an issue to get me to refund it?

I am going to contact eBay and report the buyer for improper use of returns.

Sounds like they bought the phone to "play" with, realized they didn't like it, or needed the money more and decided to start making false accusations in order for them to get their money back.

Glad to see they sent it back and everything was okay with the phone.

Sucks you had to pay for the return shipping and whatever PayPal fees you'll be hit with, though.

In that case that secondary bank account wouldn't really even be needed then.

If only there weren't this thing called human error you would be correct.

It is ALWAYS best to have the second bank account because you are relying on a bank employee to revoke paypal's right to withdraw. If you have the second bank account like I do and drain it except for $1 to keep it open the minute the pay pal funds hit the account, then if the bank employee messes up, you aren't out any money. If the bank tries to charge you overdraft fees, you can easily get those reversed since the bank employee messed up.

It is much, much harder to try to get the money back from paypal if the bank employee messes up. Plus you are out the cash until you can get it straightened out if at all.

I have fee free checking at my bank so it is no big deal for me to have a second checking account.

Alright, this will be my final update on this matter. I received a message from the buyer asking where his refund was. Per eBay, the refund is due by 6/14/16. So, in my defense, I have 3 more days before I have to issue it to him. When he initiated the return, he has until 6/2/16 to send it and he sent it on 6/2/16. So, me being me and in the highly annoyed mood I'm in over the whole thing, messaged him to let him know that I have until said date and that it is not that date yet.

Also, what I did not post here and while not the biggest deal in the world, I'm annoyed by it. When I received the phone back I was very focused on the phone and making sure it was fine. The other day I was going through the accessories and everything. I never use the accessories from the Apple box. I like to keep them sealed and new in the box, as I always sell my devices and think the next owner would appreciate brand new accessories. I have a bunch of charging bricks and cables so I don't need more. Anyway, the charging brick that was sent back to me and the lightning cable were definitely not mine. I expected them not to be brand new any longer, however the cord was frayed and you could see the inside of it and the grey part of the charging brick was a pee-yellow. Like it has been used for years. I'm positive no amount of use in the month long period would make it discolor like that, nor would it cause as many scratches as were on it. I told him in the message in addition to being lied to to accept a return, I also did not appreciate receiving accessories that were not the ones I sent. It won't get me anywhere, but I felt as if I needed to say something, for the principle of the situation.

Whatever, I am so angry I just issued the refund to have this done and over with.

What are the rules on refunds? If you don't get everything back or get some things back that aren't the same ones that were sold, what's the rule when it comes to that? Perhaps some percentage can be taken off and only a partial refund given or something like that? I mean it can't be so that you are required to give everything back if you didn't get back what you were supposed to get back.

You did right by issuing the refund and getting this over with. Really no point in dragging this further or whether some of the refund be held back.

Put it behind you and sell the phone locally via Craigslist.

And leave accurate feedback on this POS!

Yeah, similar situation happened to me with a radar detector on Ebay. I haven't sold anything on Ebay since and I have done over 150 transactions on ebay all 100% feedback.

Last iPhone I sold the buyer sent me a message that the battery was no good. I knew for sure their was nothing wrong with the battery. So I informed him that my family is in law enforcement and if he was trying to scam me he would be caught and arrested. Next message was that he will buy a new battery off Craigslist. (My family is not in law enforcement).

My family has mob connections, we take care of things ourselves. No need to get police involved. POS should be concerned about going out at night from now on.

Glad you got it straightened out except for the pee yellow charger and bad cable. I think maybe the buyer couldn't really afford it and kept it for a little while then wanted his money back. You can report him to eBay as a bad buyer.

I dont think they can.
Only positive feedback.
I'd still leave positive and post on the comment seller beware, fraudulent buyer. Or something similar.
Either way, it's best to stay away from selling on ebay.
So leave a positive feedback. "Say you are positive this person is a scam artist and try's to cheat people. That's for sure absolutely positive, no doubt about it" and for good measure say how positive you are that selling on eBay is a hazard to honest people.
