yeh, those are called craigslist scams.

no one would buy a 3GS for that much when you can easily find a 4 for much less.

They are out there, those scammers. I had to finally start putting in my ads that I would not accept Paypal nor ship overseas. One person even wanted me to list my phone on his site for $20.

I know fishing scams, I deal on CL a lot, buddy sold his jb'd and unlocked 3gs for $325, plenty of dumb people willing to pay without knowing better lol. Same for MacBook Pros as well.

I ended up selling my 32GB 3GS off Craigslist for $230. But with the way Craiglist tends to work, you kinda go with the best offer you can get from someone who actually bothers to follow up. Sucks about the $180/$200 ATM thing, though.

When you guys sell your old 3gs do you do just a restore via iTunes, just a restore via the phone, or do you also do a round of filling up the phone's memory with random data and then resetting again? I'm thinking that if I sold mine I wouldn't want a buyer being able to easily bring back all my data and then snoop through all the pictures I've taken or use the apps that have saved passwords.

Also, I noticed that Target offers a $115 giftcard for trading in a 32gb 3gs and Best Buy offers a $125 giftcard for it. Has anyone had a good experience using that sort of trade-in program, or would I be better off with craigslist?

That's good considering I bought my iPhone 4 for 250 on contract of 1 year

For what it's worth, OP, I sold mine in October (Maybe September?) for $280.

It was a 32gb white 3GS, bought on launch day (What was that, June 19th, 2010?).

We were literally negotiating over $5 increments. I had it listed for $300, I think (I listed high, expecting some negotiation). Other sellers were offering me $275, and since he was there in front of me, I said if you can give me $270, it's yours. He only had $20 bills, so he just gave me $10 extra.

I would be careful about getting into peoples' cars, although I guess this was at a pretty public place.

I always try to meet at Starbucks for CL stuff (I think that is the official 'storefront' of CL now), every couple of months I read a horror story about some guy getting robbed or even shot by CL thieves, pretty scary stuff.

I have gone to peoples' houses, but then there's a clear email trail and location, I don't think a thief would have people come over to their house and then rob them. Worse comes to worse let them steal your money, then leave and call the cops.

One time I sold a notebook computer to some guy who asked to meet me outside his apartment, because he didn't want his girlfriend to know how much he was spending on it. In retrospect, that's not a great sign- he could've given me a random address not tied to him, and maybe used a stolen cell phone or something like that. But he was totally legit and I did complete the sale.

I always meet people at a Starbucks. There are so many of them around and everybody seems to know where one is. I would never meet somebody in a car or at a house. I suppose if I ever wanted to buy something big from someone that couldn't reasonably be taken to a Starbucks, I would bring an entourage with me.

And, yes OP, you got a decent price for your phone. Sure, you may have eventually found some dufus who didn't know what he was doing to pay way more, but you did fine.

Hmm seems cheap. Here in UK they are still selling for £250+ for a used phone.
