In rural areas I often see that.

Not to mention some countries like here. We are right by the capital of mexico state and even there the data will rarely pull voip. Fortunately we can go to *SOME* parks and hook into wifi. The data is so bad that I only use it when the electricity or phone line is out. Last week the phone lines were stolen and it took 5 days to get them put back in.

Why in the world is everyone complaining about their $100 bill?? Just sign up with straight talk and get unlimited everything for $50. Seriously..

I only use a cell phone despite having a VoIP line in the house (as well as a landline for work). I can see this happening for me but I don't want to carry around a 7" device. I hated carrying a 4.7" device as a matter of fact. I don't carry a purse enough to really find a comfortable way of making this happen but I would be more than interested in having a cheaper phone bill. That is for sure.

Has anyone ever actually tried using the wifi in Starbucks for a VoIP call or Skype? I tried it once, my god it was bad, real bad, 750ms+ first hop latency routed thru Texas or something (I was in NYC). I pity the fools who rely on this for communication trying to save some chump change in the process. Hope you don't rely on this method of communication for an income... Sheesh..

saw it thru my friend one time and honestly, will not try doing it. i also got a phone call from my uncle who has a magicbox and it's horrible. calls will get drop so often, call is static, sounds like you're in a tunnel talking. not the best but i am amazed that so many people are using it. maybe the cost outweighs it's shortcomings. so i guess same with the VOIP on an Ipad. people think it's free so naturally they can live with the disadvantages of VOIP/SKYPE.

I definitely agree that moving to an iPad only model is not ideal (especially for someone who heavily relies on their phone). I personally use ~2000 minutes per month by myself not counting my wife's minutes.

For the time being I will stick with an iPad and iPhone combo. Believe me though, I would be the first in line to get rid of them for a 5" iPhone that could fill both of their shoes.

No, its surely not for most people. I would love though to cut my cell bill in half, I would also love to cut my car note in half, heck and everything else I pay monthly for, who in their right mind wouldn't. Some of the methods used to do it though are just not worth the savings IMO. OP your idea sounds doable, I say give it a shot and see how it works out, you can always get another phone.

I talk very little on my phone also. I thought about porting my number to Tracfone and getting a cheap $10-20 phone, get that 400min 1 yr card and depending on the phone it'll double or triple you minutes.

Then getting a mini with cellular and use my goggle voice number or something for texting

Talkatone is a nice solution, though the call quality is a little iffy. Still, the telephone aspect of my phone is the least used feature. The call quality is good enough to get by in most cases.
