EDIT: Found a solution to the problem. Look at post #3 below for it.

I like being able to message people while using my MBA, but I use a lot of emoticons to display emotion and keep conversations light hearted. The MBA doesn't seem to have any of these (it only sends text faces like :'( instead of a real picture emoticon like on the iPhone).

How would I get them?

p.s. I already tried the bottom right of the text area with the faces, those aren't real emoticons... simply text faces as I explained above.

Also, when I send an iPhone emoticon iMessage to my MBA it actually works. My MBA sees the picture, so it's not like the MBA can't handle emoticons. Just that when I am sending texts to iPhones from my MBA there doesn't seem to be an option to send emoticons, just text based smileys.

How would I fix this?

Solved it! :D

Anytime you're in the text field simply press:
command + option + t

That will put up a list of options, one of which is Emoji that you can use for sending to iPhones.
