Hi Everyone,

I'm new to MacRumors, but so far I love it. Especially the iphone section :D

So anyways, I currently have an iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 jailbroken and unlocked. I don't know what was used to jailbreak it, because when i bought it, it was already jailbroken. It is untethered jailbreak, so i assume that it is the old bootrom.

Right now, I want to upgrade it to 4.0.1. But, I want to keep all my apps and cydia apps. Apparently, iTunes can help with backing up regular apps and contacts and etc. But for cydia apps, I heard that i can use AptBackup, PkgBackup, or RockApp?

For the jailbreak, supposely i can use redsn0w to modify the ipsw of the 3gs ios4.0.1 so that when i use itunes restore, i restore it to a jailbroken firmware

I also want to keep my unlock, but ultrasn0w already supports 4.0.1 so that should be ok, right?

I also heard that I need to unhide all apps and turn off some stuff like categories, lockinfo, and backgrounder. Am I correct?

I just want to make sure that I have all my stuff after the update.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP :D:):apple:

An untethered JB on 3.1.3 doesnt mean its the old bootrom.
2nd you cannot updated your firmware and keep all your JB stuff. You will have to install them again and you'd have to double check if they're compatible with 4.+ firmware. Some Packages that worked with 3.1.3 will not with the latest firmware.
3rd open up cydia and look at the top of the page to see if you have shsh for 4.0.1 or else you wont be able to update to it.
4th you dont use redsnow for a 3GS on 4.0.1
You will need an official simcard to activate the phone and then you will open up safari and go to jailbreakme.com in order to jb and then install ultrasnow thru cydia to unlock.
5th and last you got alot more learning ahead of you before you attempt anything and 3GS iphones are tricky when shsh's come into play and the use of tinyumbrella to restore/update to any firmware besides the latest 4.1 thats out.

thanks for your quick reply

Anyways, I was wrong about redsn0w. I'm suppose to use PwnageTool if I have a iphone 3gs with old bootrom and already jailbroken. But problem is that I don't know if it's spirit jailbreak.

for the activation problem, apparently i can follow this guy's tutorial here . And it also jailbreaks with jailbreakme.com

so for the restore problem, can I restore with an iPhone 3GS 4.0.1 ipsw found here? then perform the jailbreak

If you have the old bootrom only then you can use a custom ipsw created with pwnage.
If you're not sure dont try it.
Did you open up cydia to find out what shsh's you have saved and for what firmware version?
That mumbo jumbo that that dude posted on youtube about code * # 307 # is BS and wont activate your phone. If you update to official 4.0.1 you will need an official sim to activate it. Either a prepaid or any even old inactive simcard will do. Then you can use jailbreakme.com to JB.

oh ok, thank you so much
i actually have a friend who has a official sim card AND he uses an iphone too. I could prob borrow his sim to do this update thing
also, my shsh supports 3.1.3, 4.01 and 4.02, so that should be good

THANK YOU:D
