1) I have retrieved all my data from it, expect a 800 firefox taps.
2) The Q is if I should try and fix it. I will replace it soon anyway, but can be fixed, I'll give it a try.

The problem is not new but has happened before on/off. I thought it was the OS, and is had been almost zero all summer. Now its back, and much worse. I have the machine backed up. It has never been reinstalled.

If it can be fixed easily, then sure, but I am not going to invest a lot of time or money into it. I am writing this from it, but I had to reboot it 10 times to do it, and I keep it lightly loaded.

I have installed EtreCheckPro and it says the harddrive is failing and the the CPU has experienced kernel panic, which can also point to issues. I wonder if it is only the hard drive, as I could replace that myself cheaply, so I can wait to Balck Friday to replace it?

  • Can the disk utility help me in the short term?
  • I will try and locate a Sintech adapter in stock with fast delivery. There appear to be two that will fit, depending on it double or single-sided NVME. I have a P31 and a Kingston that both might work.
  • I wonder if I can transplant the motherboard from this to any other A1466 type?

If HDD mechanically failing, then no.

For what purpose?

1) Its an SSD. If its areas, it could close part of the disk that is damaged.
2) The hinge is ruined, and the battery too, so I would get a cheap defect A1466 as donor, to keep it running for a couple more months.

I was advised to use a HD tool and it showed the SDD was close to perfect for its age and should work.
As I got a NVME adaptor, I tried to install a new drive and it worked fine. So I returned the old SSD to the slot to see, and now it works again. The reason likely being corrosion on the SSD slot. It solved itself.
I will transplant the mobo to a new old case that is in the mail, as the hinge in this is dead.
