So I'm here waiting with all the rest of you and my primary reason for not caving in an getting a 2011 iMac is that it's just a terrible ECONOMIC decision. We all know the 2011 iMac is a capable machine. Just a bad buy at full ticket, that's all. It is failure to pay complete cream on 15-month-old tech, full stop.
Well, Fry's Electronics was having their summer Mac sale, which may still be going on depending on where you're located but I believe it ended today in my region. They had 2011 Macs Mini at 15% off, 2011 iMacs at 10% off, and, much to my amazement, 2012 MacBook Airs and Pros 13" at 18% off (or whatever it amounts to when you get the $1199 model for $999 -- which is better than Apple's own employee F&F discount).
Even after buying 16GB of DDR3-1600, I walked out of the Tempe, AZ Fry's with a new MBP for ~$1160 before sales tax. Now, with this, I can wait even if the new iMac doesn't show up until 2013. This machine should tide me over nicely while my 2009 iMac enjoys early retirement as a glorified cash register at my business. And there's a fair chance when the new iMac DOES arrive, assuming the iMac isn't EOLed instead, that my MBP will still be current and will resell for most of what I paid for it. Even if it's only one model back from current, it will hold a decent percentage.
Yeah, it's not the world-beating screamer of a machine my eventual iMac (or redesigned Mac Pro depending how long this wait is) will be. And this solution is likely to work for some folks but not others. But for what is effectively the world's cheapest medium-term notebook computer rental, I think this will work well for me. And most importantly, it's a sound ECONOMIC decision, which was the most logical reason to wait for a refresh in the first place.
