Thanks Kryten2, I'll try and use those files instead when I get time to do it later today :D

So while in Safe Boot you weren't able to open any apps or create a new user? This is not the same as the Guest account.

I know, Safe Boot is done by holding Shift while booting, did that, it took ages to load and when it was finally done, no difference could be seen other than that the wallpaper was back to default.

At this point it would probably be easiest and less time consuming to just erase the HD and reinstall the OS.

Ahh. I read all your posts again and see that your internal DVD drive is broken and you can't get an external to work. It is a DVD and not a CD drive you are trying to use right? USB or firewire?

It's an external USB DVD drive, and it just won't connect when I try and start into CD mode. :(

I know it's an oooooooooooooooooooooooold thread, but since people do get refered to forum threads on macrumors quite a lot (this thread has over 3000 views, go figure) if they google certain issues I'd just like to explain how I managed to fix this (today, after almost 2 years).

Use the another mac's Disk Manager utility to make a "New Disk Image" from the Installer Disk, then once that is done you can use the "Restore" tab to install the disk image onto a USB drive. Then when you boot up your broken mac, plug in the usb and hold the Option key down. Select the usb drive and repair the system with the installation setup thingy. :D

Glad you got it fixed. Nice of you to post the solution.

Tried doing exactly that earlier, but it doesn't show up and I can't edit the title either (above the OP it now says [FIXED] in front of the title, but it doesn't show up in the forum).

May have something to do with this thread being from February 2012 I guess...
