Google has long been untrustworthy.
Uh what? Anything backing that claim?
This issue happened first time. When some Google service has downtime it’s HUGE news because it’s so rare.

And yet you claim “Google has long been untrustworthy.” in reaction to this news like it is happening all the time - which is not the case at all.

The issue seems to be related to the Google Drive desktop app on Windows that syncs to Google Drive cloud storage. For years I used that service until Google began suffering from corporate ADD and would rework the software every 12-16 months causing major headaches on my systems.

I now only use Google Drive via the web browser or PWA. And that only for Google Docs files (with only the occasional PDF or image file).

On my primary desktop system (M2 Mac Mini), I use Time Machine to back everything up. Time Machine is a mediocre backup option, but it does the job. Working with a Time Machine backup that spans 18 years was a very frustrating experience. I swapped the drive out when I bought the Mac Mini and started a new backup image.

But I'm an oddball, I have files that are nearly 40 years old that I occasionally need to retrieve. o_O😁

Still better than iCloud, I've tried switching to it once and couldn't believe how bad it is, especially its website feels like something designed in 2007. If you don't trust Google then probably Onedrive is the best third option.

Watching my two external drives, drinking my coffee - an yes; never spend a dime in clouds and had all those problems.

Oh no.

What is the best way to back up Google Drive to my laptop if I don’t have a personality?

I wonder what Googles T&C's are when it comes to loss of files that is a result of something they have done because if it turns out that gigs and gigs of customers files have been lost I can see Google being faced with a hefty lawsuit.

This happened to me twice with icloud and the Books app. In my case, the pdfs never showed up in the cloud but disappeared from the Books app. I will never use icloud or Books app again.

Exactly. Pros call it RAID ;-).
BS. Devices fail. RAID isn't failure-proof. Not to mention fire, flood, theft. Bye bye your "Pro" RAID and data.

Not to mention cloud has much more functionality (accessibility from many devices for one) than a directly connected external drive.

I keep my cloud data fully synced on multiple devices.

Enjoy your coffee. Just don't spill it on your external drive. ;)

So it’s rare but it can happen! Proof we shouldn’t put all our eggs in the cloud basket. I commented awhile ago that everyone should have larger internal storage for reasons like this.

I think going forward I’m going to store all my files locally and then copy to iCloud as a back up in addition to Time Machine back ups.

I keep everything local on a Synology DS220+. Then I sync my Synology DS220+ to an offsite Synology DS423+. No "Cloud storage" can be trusted! The only time I use "Cloud storage" is to put a copy of a file to share among my various devices.

Either get a NAS or DAS-RAID and drop the cloud dependency. I do use Backblaze for backup, but it’s the third step in my backup chain. Mac -> DAS -> NAS -> BackBlaze.

Shows the level of dependency and trust we have on cloud storage now, if anything happened to my iCloud Drive I'd lose so much...think it's time to invest in a separate back-up solution, maybe get something decent in the Black Friday deals! Oh wait...
You should be backing up anyway. Plug in an external drive and let Time Machine do its thing in the background. Drives are dirt cheap at this point.

It's not an either/or situtation. Use cloud storage but back everything up in case you get locked out or stuff gets deleted. Not rocket science.
