Some interesting wifi I've got here

So I've noticed something interesting with my wifi, maybe you guys could explain it to me...

I'm in the process of downloading the windows 7 RC just to play with it. I started the download and it said 2 hours 13 min to finish. Cool, thats good with me. But as soon as I quit safari the time jumps up to 7 hours!! Lol. But as soon as I reopen safari the time goes back down. Its so weird. I don't mind leaving safari open, I'm just curious as to why it does this.

I go from 650ish KB's/sec to under 100 KB's/sec then back again.

What program are you using to download it?

It's getting weirder now. When I play CoD4 over xbox live my connections bars goes from 3 to 4 when I have safari opened up! I'm so confused.
