Apple stumbling over cut corners and high profit margins
Do you have evidence Apple’s profit margins are higher with BOE displays than other ones?

Might this simply be a diversification issue rather than Apple looking at ways to cut corners? Apple goes for high profit margins (and always has) but Apple doesn’t cut corners at the expense of quality. Quality concerns are part of the trouble BOE has had making displays for Apple. Apple only uses the relatively few of their displays that meet quality requirements. That's not an indication of cutting corners by Apple. BOE might have been cutting corners, but Apple only uses what ends up being within specified quality ranges.

This report might be enough for Apple to move on from BOE. Apple was already considering that (there have been multiple stories about BOE trying to keep Apple's business) and it's possible this is what ends BOE's contracts with Apple.

For some reason comments are blaming Apple. BOE steals technology from Samsung, sells product cheaper than the real innovator, Samsung (hey it’s easy to sell cheap when BOE’s product R&D budget is zero), then fraudulently misrepresents tech when selling to Apple. China has been doing this for decades. Next they will ‘steal’ Taiwan … Long term though, China is finished.

Final thoughts:
Your iPhone works exactly the same.
If your screen must be replaced, it will be replaced by one from another maker.
No recall will be made.
Apple will need to worry for next phones and for parts for current models.

Nothing of value was lost, for once, for customers. Apple, OTOH, might need to rethink its business - or who it does business with.

If Apple dares to use BOE for future iPhone Pros in America. It will be the ultimate deal breaker in technology history. An abomination of an insult as well. Imagine paying for a Bugatti and they end up giving you an engine from a 1995 Nissan Sentra 😒
Yugo level.

If I am paying a premium for a product like Apple I hope they don’t get into shady practices so I had to reread the Macrumors post. Samsung first brought this up in October 2023 and Apple still decided to manufacture the iPhone 16 (2024) with BOE screens and ship into the US. I’m a little heart broken.
2025 iPhone 16's were well along the pipeline/supply chain/sales in April 2025 when Samsung filed amended Civil Suit in US District Court (Texas) and it is still being (I assume) litigated. You will note too that FUTURE imports containing BLE stuff could well be restricted or outright banned in stuff imported into the US. Until the case is done and on the record, BLE screens can be imported on iPhones. But that's not an attractive sustainable loophole for Apple. I $ee a huge monetary $ettlement in favor of Samsung and $toppage of BLE $creen iPhone build$ maybe before Chri$tma$. Apple's law units were aware this was a possible outcome as far back as October 2023 unless they were totally asleep and a process is very likely ongoing from near that time, deals felt out for alternate supply chain, costs calculated, etc. BLE will take a huge hit here or will be excised from Apple's (at least display) supply chain. But the cat IS out of the bag, inevitably. How's that blood oxygen app doing, Apple?

And some wonder why Apple seems hellbent on designing and producing its own components. They started with curb stomping Intel with Apple Silicon, then came the C1 5G modem, next up is their own Bluetooth/WiFi chip. Maybe displays are on their radar as well.

I don’t think they will ever do displays; case in point LG/Samsung already do an outstanding job of working with Apple and have for years. LG is responsible for like every large display Apple has (iMacs and the standalone display), while LG and Samsung have been working with Apple on phone and laptop screens forever now and never have any major issues (once the woke out the production bugs) that I know of besides meeting the demand, which is where companies like BOE come in.

Edit: when I say display I mean the panels.

Thing is the cost and time takes for Apple to at least divert manufacturing somewhat to US is just enormous. Apple likely will still have to use China as manufacturer in the next decade or so while they work on building manufacturing in US, assuming Apple finds out ways to solve rare earth material issue that China controls 90% of world supply of, specifically the refining tech.
It's just surprising that Apple (and others) failed to diversify. This could have been avoided years ago if they would have had more than one place to manufacture the devices. Apple got caught with their pants down by relying solely on 1 manufacturer for their products and is now trying to scramble.

If you own a Bugatti with a W16 engine you are actually getting two VR6 engines mated together using a common crankshaft. The VR6 was the engine from the Golf and Passat. In 1995 the VR6 produced 172bhp vs Sentra 115bhp. In all honesty I don’t think a Bugatti owner would care as they already own a car with two Passat engines.

I don’t get hung up on where something comes from as long as it works and is reliable. We own a Volvo Cross Country S60 that was made is China, but this car is the most reliable car our family has ever owned.

BOE was the cheapest panel option compared panel with Samsung, LG and EIZO for a reason : stolen tech.

Usually found across myriad of Chinese phone, but for Apple, honestly that's quite unforgivable since Apple device charge premium for their devices.
How can it be stolen? There’s no such thing in China
