I have used the search button :))) and I've read a lot about the issues with thermal paste. My questions are:

1.) Do the new lines of SR MBPs (released on June 5) have the same heating issues as earlier generations?

2.) How do the temperatures of MBPs compare to comparably performing PC laptops?

3.) How much temperature is reduced by elevating the MBP? Recommended materials for elevating? (I don't want to spend money on a $50 stand).

4.) How would you go about Apple getting to fix the thermal paste? What kind of Apple store do you go to? (The only Apple store I know of is the kind that operates in a mall and sells stuff, but do those stores have technicians? Are there PC repair places with "authorized Apple technicians"?)

5.) When you're talking with an Apple technician, what are the right things to say to prod them in the right direction to get them to do the work you want? Should I have any temperature monitoring programs on my Mac before I go in? (And do Apple stores really run colder than normal rooms?)

6.) Has anybody who has used smcFanControl had any issues with it yet?

    Thanks,
    ~newmacchick

If you used the search function you should have been able to find answers to all your questions. Also, the thermal paste issue is bogus in my opinion. These are powerful notebooks and should not be rested on your body for a long period of time. It does get hot but it isn't going to burn or blow up on you.

Well I'm a woman so I'm not really worried about any sterility issues...I'm more concerned about the length of life. I plan to use this thing for a looong time.

If you would kindly give me the links to those threads, I'd appreciate it. I have gleaned some information about the above questions, but I'd like to hear several users confirm it before I write it off as fact. Anything I know has come offhand from a user on this forum in a thread related to the question but not specifically addressing it.

    1) I have a MBP C2D, and have zero heat problems...i'm pretty sure the only ones with heat issues were the first CD ones.

    2) All I can say is that my Dell was un-usable on my lap, so was my CD MacBook...This C2D MBP is on my lap all night...of course, i can't speak for the SR MBP, but I can't imagine they get hotter than my C2D.

    3) A TON. Although I don't think mine gets anywhere near uncomfortable. If you elevate it and use it heavily...the bottom will barely feel warm. It cools through conductions then convection, so this makes sense.

    4) Thermal paste is not an issue. Never was. Apple fixed the heat problems by adjusting the fans and by making the vents on the back larger...not by adding less paste.

    5) They will always say it's fine. Apple has never once said they sell "laptops".

    6) I don't need it, neither will you.

Thanks for the information :) Can't wait to run out to my Apple store and purchase my MBP.

Anybody else with a new C2D can continue to post, though.
