Some observations between 2010 and 2011 MBP 13"

Very informative tread!

I do have a question. What's your take on the so called "downgrade" on the gpu? Is the Intel 3000HD that bad?
I have been given the opportunity to trade my 2010 model for the 2011 (base model 13" MBP) I mainly use it for photography and video editing, not for video games as most of the comments I've read, anyways, will I notice a difference? Will it be an upgrade?

The HD3000 is on par or a bit worse than the 320M, depending on the application. The difference in performance between the two is so small you won't even notice it unless you're benchmarking, and even then, the Sandy Bridge i5 which is MUCH faster than the core 2 duo in the 2010 will more than make up for the difference in performance.

Also If by video editing you mean encoding videos then that's completely Dependant on the CPU, in which case you will see a huge improvement in encoding speed.

Btw, this guy did some benchmarks on the GPUs of the 13" MBPs:

im so excited for my new mbp 13" W/ ssd!
itll be my first mac, is the screen still nice looking, even though they did not upgrade it?

How does battery life seem on the 2011 model compared to the 2010, not including DVD movie playback which uses the optical drive.

I love my 2010 13" with SSD+640GB storage drive.

I don't encode so I won't be upgrading. But I'm glad you like it.

Fair enough. Thanks for the help.

I tested both macbooks using superdrive, identical settings, etc., so i'm assuming there will be a similar difference in battery life no matter what you do.

I had the 2010 13" MBP for 5 weeks and got it exchanged for a 2011. On my 2nd 2011 now...

For me, the general loudness of the processor is the same, however, the 2011 seems a bit louder.

The airport speed/connectivity is the same. Safari is giving me problems right now; on my 2010 it was fine. It keeps freezing and giving me the "You are not connected to the internet." I have reset my router and restarted my MBP, still the same problem. I keep having to close Safari, turn the airport off and then back on, and reopen Safari. I had Firefox on my 2010 that I used half the time but I was set on sticking with Safari this time. Guess I can't...

Errr, the processor isn't loud. You're hearing the fans.

Also, those problems aren't Safari's fault. It's Airport's fault. I work tech at my school, and Macs have terrible Wifi reception due to the aluminum enclosure. I have yet to find a fix for my MacBook Air yet, but if I'm not close enough to a wireless router, I usually just stick with Ethernet, and this is what I would recommend if you keep getting this issue. By the way, when you toggle your Airport, you don't need to close Safari. You can just turn Airport off and on, then refresh Safari. I have to do this every 10 minutes or so on my MacBook Air here..

Maybe... I hear the fans continuously but this clicking noise seems like the processor. Also, I asked about this on another thread, but the drive heads parking seem to make loud noise too.

Every 10 minutes? You are one patient person. My 2010 didn't do this. In fact I didn't have to turn the airport off and on for those entire 5 weeks. Also, my router is 15 feet away and it shows I have full reception, never goes down past full. Oh yes, sometimes when it happens when I have 2 tabs open, one tab gives me that message and it freezes, but the other tab is working fine. This shouldn't be happening...

Ok, I continue to read about loud processor, clicking sounds from driver heads parking, noise from fans running, some connectivity issues... Is it worth to upgrade? I'll be picking trading my 2010 13" MBP in a few hours. Should I do it or not?

Why not? I have the base 13" and have not had a single issue.

I had this problem regurarlu on my 2010, until it just went away by itself for no reason. Dont have this problem on the 2011

a processor has the same "noise making" potential as a hunk of cheese.

You are not hearing the processor. maybe you're hearing the fans maybe the hard drive.

There are only a hand-full of moving parts in a laptop:

• Various Fans (2 in the MBP, i believe)
•*non-SSD Hard drives
•*optical drive
• keyboard keys (when you press them)
• trackpad (when you press it)
• screen hinges (when you open/close the screen)
• power button and battery check button (when you push them)
• speakers (they vibrate when you send them an audio signal)

That's it.

Nothing else moves.

Yeah, it's the SMS. I guess it's much more sensitive than the 2010, at least for me.

Uuugh

I bought a 2010 13" entry level, and by heart sank :( when the i5s were announced. I was (amazingly) able to talk with best buy and arrange for them to let me swap my 2010 for the 2011. :D

I have been sweating every little thing so much I wish I had just been assed out and not had the option.

Even before I swapped I was concerned about the intel graphics, i too had heard that the reasoning for staying C2D was to preserve space for seperate graphics, and e reduced battery lif.. I'd hate to take one step forward (i5) and two steps back (graphics/battery)

Anyway. My wife convinced me i was a fool for debating whether I should take my good luck and upgrade after I had the 2010 for 64(!) days. Of course I should!

Siiigh. I did
I might be tripping, because i am g-d crazy about this stuff, but
1. It DOES get hotter. Like another poster (another thread?) said, the old one was dead cold. This one cooks.
2. Seems hiccupy. I think. Or stuttery? Feel like the 2010 was just butter all over the place. It was my first mac, so though I had some growing pains, the MACHINE knew what to do, and took me there... This one?
3. Is the hinge a little looser? Seems to "open" wider when I lift the whole thing while open.
4. Keyboard. I must be the exception. Mine feels STIFFER if anything. I've commented to my wife twice so far. (who, i must say, just insists I am a f-n loon...)
5. MagSafe charging didn't "engage" last night, had to remove and reseat. Don't remember this on the other, is itbknown to happen? So far it only has happened once since launch day.

I do agree that the battery is more likely more ACCURATE than reduced. I for one NEVER got even close to ten hours.

I'm sure all of this could be imagination... I can't exactly run em side by side (exchanged). I NEED to worry about something, so I could just be hyper critical. But hell, if best buy had just said no? I'd only have THAT to complain about. .... Errrrrrrrrr!
