It's funny. Apple DOES recommend everyone do the latest Monterey update.
Look where that's gotten us.
I just wish they would have warned us on the software update page that this may brick older Macs.
That would have made me hesitate.
Sincerely, Dave.
Agreed, but my 2020 iMac is not "older," in that it is still being sold.

I'm wondering if reports of issues are still common with the latest 12.2.1 MacOS causing any issues with older Macs? I have a late 2015 i7 iMac still humming along on Catalina. Sure would not want to it to brick or dramatically slow down upon updating. Any insight into the current reports would be much appreciated, as I did not see any more recent posts than this one. ?

FWIW...
Apple did cover the repair. They replaced the logic board.
Unfortunately, when I got my iMac back they did not perform the Monterey update.
For some reason I'm very leery about doing the update.
So I called apple (again) and asked them if I should. They said I should be fine because the logic board has already been replaced.
I think I'll wait a little while longer.
It is an hour drive one way to get to the authorized repair facility.
They did say it would be covered if it bricked again because it's still covered under the most recent repair.

Sincerely, Dave.

APPLE knows exactly what it does and do it with intent: this is war on its users and criminal offense plus lack of respect for their users intelligence including people working in Art, Show Biz, Music.

In the 90's there were computers like Atari ST and Amiga which are still running fine, same for older PC under DOS. The issues Mac, iPhone, Windows 10 users are facing are thus manufactured and planned.

Any programmers and programs which mess up with the firmware and OS are doing it willingly and with intent, i's not a programmation error: these kind of issues are occuring not randomly but regularly with updates, you should check history of Mac bricking and rendered useless by other means (video card failure, hard drive failure, ...) to see for yourself. Those are all planned so you go to cry to mummy Apple to get a freeby: this is manufactured dependency like a drug addict with his dealer...

So what's the objectives of Apple? Forcing its user base to migrate to the newer hardware by blackmailing them: either you upgrade / contact our support or you loose your data.

But it goes deeper: forced migration is not just about money, it's about control of your life => most people use computers and screen devices like iPhone, iPad, PC, Android phones up to 8 hours a day. Count on those companies making them to be well aware of this fact.

So they funnel their users / serfs to forced update / upgrade into digital slavery: see titytainment from Brezenski, the shallows from Emmanuel Carr, the global trap book . Because in a 'society' which is based on digital illusion and mass hypnosis all those screens (which are lamps) are causing people to be entranced like flies and mothes to flame.

Don't be fooled: programmation is a deterministic craft and business, Apple master all the aspects of your Mac hardware and software (Apple has complete proprietary control of both). So they do it on purpose.

I advise you to migrate your data to human respecting platforms (out of the cloud and internet), sue Apple for manipulations and crime against humanity, ask your friends having the same issues on their Mac and iPhone to join you and contact your friends traders to tank Apple stock value.

Sorry to all of those who had this happen to their Macs. I wonder if restoring through recovery (Cmd R booting up) would solve the issue?
I have a Mac Mini late 2014 with 4GB Ram and running at 1.4GHz with a non Apple SSD (installed by an approved Mac Apple Store: I brought in the SSD I bought in Amazon).

This Mac bought as second hand on the Mac Store has worked like a charm from the moment the SSD get installed, that is in 2018, before it couldn't beat a snail. This was with Mojave.

The update for Catalina worked also great but there was problem in double screen scenario.

Whatever I religiously not upgraded to Big Sur: got an intuition that would not do the Mac any good.

And I wait to upgrade to Monterey till march 2022. The upgrade worked perfectly well.

BUT 15 days later, the main uset account started to turn very very slow, in fact freezing. No freeze, no lag on other users.

After troubleshooting, I couldn't find out the root cause: I disabled Spotlight, cleared all caches, repaired the disk permissions -> NO changes. It was very very odd. Found out it was probably caused by windowserver. I did PRAM and SMC reset, no change.

But why no problem with other users?

I decided to completely reinstall the OS, wiping out the drive and using a time machine backup from start of March 2022. And there after hours of copying, the Mac got the switch off automatically after 15 secs boot.

I said to me, "OK, let's do the wipe out of the SSD and install OS from internet", 5 hours download and install, same kill switch boot. But the hardware works: it's able to download for 5 hours, able to install.

Strangely I tried that several time and each time it was a different OS version which was installed: high sierra, mojave, never big sur nor monterey. This look like Apple is behaving the Microsoft way where computers are completely out of control and undecipherable beast.

SO? I strongly smell politics and Apple pushing people to upgrade to new hardware. But more than that I feel the end of the US empire: the States are in fire, nothing runs good anymore there and from there, it's complete chaos.

Now the Mac mini is bricked: I searched for a firmware upgrade but this Mac has none AFAIK, it has no T2 chip so no DFU AFAIK, and 2 days lost... maybe I can turn this dead horse into a linux machine?

Lost a 2014 Mac Mini (i5/8GB) to this last weekend. Now the Mac Mini won't even power on. Nothing, no fans, just dead. Had a spare power supply around, still dead. I guess this issue isn't fixed?

Can't do the T2 fix obviously. Not under warranty so not going to waste my time with Apple Support since it's old anyway. Going to either ebay for parts or just trash it. Such a waste.

Welp. 12.3.1 bricked my 2020 iMac. Again. This computer has already had its power supply and logic board replaced for the same problem. when I did the last update, after Apple replaced all those parts, I had to use configurator to revive after a failed update. That did not work this time.

Haven’t been compelled to upgrade my 2016 Macbook Pro. Still on Big Sur. These horror stories certainly don’t convince me to.

My MacBook Pro 13-inch is less than two years old and the update to Monterey bricked it last night! I only updated it because of the alerts Apple put out about needing all Apples to update for security. Waiting to see what Apple will do here. Not happy at all right now.
