hey everyone just got my iBook today and I had some questions about it. I am running Panther.

1) I got this on eBay, and while OS X is a clean install the last user loaded it. Thus his name is on the Computer. While I have changed a lot there is one aspect that remains. When I look at my computer in the network area, it says "John-Doe-Computer" I want it to just say "Shrike". It's a minor peeve of mine, but all my computers on my network have the name Shrike in them, my Dell is called "Darkstar-Shrike", I want this one to be called
"Shrike" Basically, how do I erase the old user and make everything mine...without reinstalling...

2) I have a windows workgroup...even my Linux Server is on the workgroup...how do I add my computer to the workgroup? Also I can see Windows files, how do I access my iBook files on my Windows machine?

3) the old user shows up in Rendevouz in ichat...how do i fix that so its my name?

Thank you.
Mike

It's not that big a deal to reload the OS - are you sure you want to keep fixing little things that pop up? Might just be best to reinstall Panther and be done with it, as you've just gotten the machine.

1) Open your System Preferences.... the answer lies at the top of the Sharing Preference Pane.

2) Also in the Sharing Preference Pane, under Services, enable the Windows Sharing option.

3) Change your information in the Address book... it uses the user's vCard for the Rendezvous name in iChat.

1) Open your System Preferences- The space for Computer Name is user changeable. You can make it anything you want. It works for rendezvous as well.

2)Set up sharing for windows under Sharing. Its really easy.

Create a new account for yourself and call it whatever you want. Make sure you make it an admin account. Then delete the previous account.

You can change the name of the computer as well. System Preferences > Sharing.

Actually, look around in all the System Preferences to see what you can do.

When I've been on a Windows network I've been able to see all the other machines from Finder under Network. If you have file sharing turned on then they should be able to see you as well.

JSW: Appearently when I bought the book, there was Panther on it, but no software...Appearently am the 3rd owner of it...So until I get to school and get a job again to buy software, I am SOL.

Everyone else: Everything worked out fine thanks guys.
