I understand the part about the watch connecting to a known wifi network.

But the SMS forwarding off wifi, is, I think, something new. Perhaps it's not... but for some reason I was under the impression that devices needed to be on the same wifi network. Perhaps not.

Works like the following:

iPhone on LTE forwards texts to Apple's cloud <--> Apple's cloud forwards texts to all associated devices (including the AW) over wifi

I have not setup SMS forwarding. I did a simple tech test, and turned off my phone. My watch would still receive phone calls and iMessages. It would not receive an SMS from an Andriod phone.

Right, because iMessage is iMessage and goes to all your iMessage devices, and your phone wasn't active to "translate" a non-iMessage SMS to iCloud.

So what was the point of your posts? The OP's situation requires that SMS forwarding be enabled.
The original poster had SMS forwarding enabled. But the second poster who restarted the thread was not clear about SMS forwarding. Regardless, the point of the experiments and posts is to understand how it works instead stating guesses as fact.

For my next tech test, I am turning on SMS forwarding and then repeating message tests with the phone off. (The phone will not be on to initially receive and forward the message.) That will tell us if SMS access on a watch depends on a phone's forward or if the watch can interact directly with the carrier to receive SMS messages like it can receive phone calls.

I think the second poster reported being logged out of Messages on the Mac and that his iPhone was on LTE rather than wifi. Unless I missed it, I didn't see anything about having SMS forwarding disabled, but I bet it's enabled just like the OP.

Another guess; he did not mention SMS forwarding at all. I hope to run a couple more quick tests that will tell us what works and does not work. I just need to get back with the one Andeoid person I know.

Right, it doesn't mean it wasn't enabled. In any case, report back to us with your findings.
