Everything you've said would be right, except in this case, where you're completely wrong. Al Gore pays to get energy from renewable resources. That means the money he gives goes to finance wind power, solar power, and other such sources. It has nothing to do with "offsetting". The article states he does buy offsets for his flying around the country, which regardless of how you feel about it, is admirable.
