Yeah this was like 10 years ago. Phones have advanced, and prices have gone up.

But I doubt you used the same phone for 10 years. So you probably got several subsidies, including one on the phone you are using now. And haven't paid off which is why you are still 'under contract'

My advice to you is to get over not having an iPhone right off. Every carrier has had issues the first 2-3 months they had the iPhone, if not longer. Use your situation to your advantage. Stay with what you have and save up a few bucks each month to pay for that unlocked phone. In six months or so there will be the iPhone 5s or whatever they call it and you can get that, and the birthing pains should be less if not gone.

I'm most likely going to buy an unlocked iPhone from the apple store, then just insert my tmobile chip. It's sad how customers who are already with tmobile get the short end of the stick, and new customers get all the benefits.

Ps, I don't have any credit, because in the past, I've tried to get an iPhone via sprint or Verizon, and they all ran credit checks on me, only to surprise me that I have to pay like 800 dollars upfront.

Well if you signed a contract and got a subsidy on a phone then the carrier is essentially fronting you 400-500 dollars and you want them to forgive that money and front you another 650 for an iphone?

What kind of business sense is that?

You fulfill your contract and then get the phone if your choice

First off, I don't care if its the iPhone 4. I just want an iPhone. Why it was assumed I was talking about the iPhone 5 the whole time is beyond me.

Secondly, I don't have any credit, as previously mentioned, and I have about 400 dollars cash, from my income tax return. Basically found money. So I'm trying to parley that into a new iPhone. I was very excited to see tmobile was finally offering said iPhone. I thought wow, ok, I don't need an unlocked one, I can just upgrade and get one through tmobile.

Third, I'm not "paying off" any phone currently. Right now I have the Samsung galaxy s. I got that in march 2012, for free. I just pay my 78 dollars per month, as per my plan, unlimited text, data, etc...

I thank everyone for their advice and opinions, but I'm just trying to get a clearer picture as to what's going to happen on the 12th. Obviously I don't want to overspend, being a tmobile customer already, but if they are going to charge an obscene amount just because I don't have credit, or have to "pay it off" ill get an unlocked phone.

I'm all confused then - why not just buy a phone outright at this stage

Because I'm trying to see what's cheaper with my current 400 dollar limit. An unlocked iPhone from apple, or all the fees and stuff that Tmobile will charge me. :)

So I actually spoke to someone in tmobile chat. What I basically learned was that I need to pay 100 dollars, no matter what, to switch from a classic plan to a value plan.

After that, I have to choose my iPhone. If I choose an iPhone 5, I have to pay 99.99, plus tax, next Friday. Then monthly, I have to pay 20 extra dollars a month. The person also said my credit, or lack thereof, is irrelevant. So we will see. If that's the case, I'll lean towards the tmobile deal. My new plan would be 50 dollars for unlimited talk and text, plus another 10 dollars for up to 2gb high speed data. Then the 20 dollars for the iPhone

I will keep everyone updated.

I think I can clear the air...

OP would rather have an unlocked hone for $650 than a locked phone for $580 (understandable). I would go that same route, EXCEPT, you won't get HSPA+ with the Apple unlocked model, unfortunately. If that doesn't matter (and it very well may not) go for the unlocked. No brainer!

Wait....he won't get hspa+ if he buys one from Apple on the 12th?

No credit ? I would take care of the credit issue first. Smartphone/+Monthly charges on top is least of your priorities. Goodness sakes

I'll organize my priorities as I see fit. Your opinion is void.

Back to the topic...

It's pretty interesting that instead of waiting until the 12th when all will be revealed or contacting T Mobile(not the clueless guy in the store) you come here and ask people pretty much guaranteed not to have the information. Then after they flail about for days trying to give you an answer you decide to,you know, actually talk to the company and get the info.
What a waste of time!
smh

But I don't have any credit, hence my problem. If I have to pay more then 350 in total, I will go unlocked from apple. Too many fees.

I don't have any credit. I've mentioned this previously.

OP has credit and no cash.
How did it take so long for this kind of post. Seriously.

???? Has credit and no cash ???

Exactly. This is why you can't rely on people on the Internet. They can't even read. Close the thread please.

But they have credit. ;)

Just so you know, having zero credit is NOT good. Paying for everything with cash is sound financially, but does nothing for you if you ever decide to purchase a home, car, or even an iPhone.

Opps,OP has no credit and not much cash? Is that correct?

He has NO credit, and only about $400 bucks. Not good just so he can have a toy. He thinks someone on this forum can help him out. Its a no brainer to fix his darn credit, and save some more cash to buy the toys he wants. No sympathy from most of us ;)

Trying to figure out "no credit". None? Not even bad credit? How does that work?

If you've been paying your bill on time for ten years you likely have some credit. You'd be surprised, just try to get your phone.

Also, try to open a credit card account. Use it responsibly, pay it off every month, etc. This is how you build credit.

There's no reason someone who is *at least* in their mid-20s shouldn't have SOME credit by now.

(I deduced this from your having had your own phone account for ten years. Since providers typically require you to be 18 to get an account.)
