H for human, easy :p

Man, how long should this take? I navigated to / and performed the exact command you gave and it hasn't given ANY output after 2 minutes.

After 5 minutes, it finally output "156g"

:p

Hard to tell what exactly you did, and what resulted. From your brief post, it doesn't sound like you followed directions too well. Right about now we should be looking at something like this:
Code:
$ [color=blue]sudo du -hxd1 /[/color]
Password:
236K	/.fseventsd
199M	/.Spotlight-V100
  0B	/.TemporaryItems
  0B	/.Trashes
  0B	/.vol
930M	/Applications
7.5M	/bin
  0B	/cores
512B	/dev
1.0K	/home
3.4G	/Library
1.0K	/net
  0B	/Network
280M	/private
5.2M	/sbin
3.4G	/System
3.1G	/Users
1.0G	/usr
4.0K	/Volumes
 12G	/

Note how i included the command i used (in blue) so we can see what i did?

What did you do exactly?

OOPIES!

l≠1

Here's what I haz:

1.8M /.fseventsd
109M /.Spotlight-V100
0B /.Trashes
0B /.vol
3.9G /Applications
3.9M /bin
0B /cores
4.0K /dev
1.0K /home
6.9G /Library
1.0K /net
0B /Network
5.2G /private
2.6M /sbin
2.3G /System
137G /Users
757M /usr
4.0K /Volumes
156G /

Though others may not be all that trim, this one stands out as being particularly chubby...
137G /Users
137 gigs in /Users... is that what you'd expect there? [got many videos or virtual Windows disks or something?]

Anyway, just walk down the hierarchy wherever you see fit.

E.g.,

sudo du -hxd1 /Users

Yeah, all of them look as I expect.

So, 156gb is accounted for, how can I tell (in terminal) the free and used space of /?

Ah! Perfect!

Used = 156g
Sum of all of the folders including hidden on / = 156g

Somehow finder was adding the 4 visible subfolders in / to 60gb less than the size of / its self! Which lead me to believe one of the invisible folders was talking up 60gb!

I've since restarted my computer and now, they read only 5gb off, which would be accounted for by /private and /System!

Thanks so much! I'll never lose these commands!

Gawd I love UNIX, it's just so simple.

No way, it's just my startup disk in my MacBook Pro, it's never been TD booted or used externally.

As well, if I put something in the trash on a drive on one mac and then plug it into another, will that trashed item occupy the trash bin on the new mac? Or do I HAVE to delete it on the same mac?
