Something is very wrong here between my two Macs.

Situation:

- My friend is working on my iMac 27’, 2019 (Mojave 10.14.6) in a pages-document and doing copy-and-paste - WiFi is turned off (and no LAN-cable is connected).

- At the same time I am in the same room and surfing the web (safari) on my MacBook Air M1, 2020 (macOS Sonoma 14.7) - WiFi is turned on (no LAN-cable is connected).

Both Macs are in the same Wifi-Network (but iMac-WiFi is turned off) and I never used file-sharing between the Macs.

- When my friend is copying text with the Apple Magic Mouse on the iMac often - when I am also doing copy-and-paste - the clipboard-text from the iMac is „transferred/transmits/jumps“ one-to-one to my Macbook Air.

Example:

My friend is copying the words „xy5xy5 zy2zy2“ on the iMac.

I am doing copy and paste in safari - but totally different things.

Then exactly the iMac-words „xy5xy5 zy2zy2“ jumps/transfers to my Macbook Air while I am doing totally different copy-and-paste (with my MacBook Airs built-in Trackpad).

So it "destroys and overwrites" my Macbook Airs clipboard contents.

During this, a small window on my Macbook Air opens up, which indicates that the two Macs connect for unwanted data-transfer.

- please see attachment -

- File sharing between the two Macs is turned off in system preferences.

- Also bluetooth File sharing is turned off in system preferences.

What is going on here and how can to stop this „connecting“ completely?

(I ask for your indulgence for my bad english, it is not my native language)

For Universal Clipboard to work, computers need to be signed in using the same Apple ID and Handoff is on. But Wi-Fi and Bluetooth also need to be on.

Thank you very much chrfr and User #07242024.

I checked it:

- Both computers are signed in using the same Apple ID: yes

- Both computers Handoff is allowed: yes

- Both computers Bluetooth is on: yes

- Both computers WiFi is on: no (only MB Air WiFi is on and no LAN-cables are connected)

Just turn off Handoff.

Thanks again - I am learning.

Data transfer is essential, but what is the purpose of transferring from
the clipboard?

Wonderful - Thank you so much, I have to look into it.

If you somtimes don't want to use Handoff, can you put it in the Control Center (in the menu-bar) for quick access - so
that you don't always have to go into the system preferences to turn it off-and-on?

Hmm I don’t think you can put in the Control Center. Maybe you can try download clipboard manager from Mac App Store so you have access to many copies.

Thanks.

Handoff for text o.k. - in the past I used Airdrop to transfer photos/videos from/to Mac or Iphone/iPad.

What ist the advantage to transfer photos/videos by handoff vs airdrop?

Or is it just another possibility?

Handoff is to continue your work across devices on apps that support Handoff.
Airdrop is to transfer files (photos, videos, text, link etc.) wirelessly across devices.
These features—including Universal Clipboard, Sidecar, Continuity Camera and others—are called Continuity.

Thanks.

Apple continuity

Fascinating.
I'll look into it.
Maybe there are youtube-videos on how to use it in detail.
Thank you very much for the suggestion.
