My iPhone 4 USB cable is starting to crack and in need of replacement, so I called AppleCare to get them to ship me out a new one.

Something odd came up though - as the CSR was trying to set up the replacement request, he couldn't find the proper USB cable in the system. He put me on hold and then came back and said that he looked up the part number in his "other system" and that it is listed as being phased out, so he had to go onto the Apple Store and do a "sales order" for me in order to ship me one from the remaining Apple Store stock.

So... I just thought that was strange... Apple's systems showing standard iPhone 4 USB cables as being "phased out"... perhaps a revised USB cable is on the horizon?

The connector cables have been updated over the years, entirely possible it is time for a refresh.

Hmm..that's quite interesting. I wonder if the iPhone 4S/5 will incorporate the MicroUSB standard that Apple signed onto?

That may be the case but I can't see Apple in a million years just discontinuing the 30pin dock connector, especially considering the phones are still in production.

I'm thinking just a revised model of the 30pin dock connector.

Maybe one with the ability to sync via thunderbolt? I don't know too much about thunderbolt to know if this is a possibility, but it's the only thing I can think of.
