Not really. If a hundred people want to play Pokemon, they need a 3DS at £150 and then the game at £30. That's a total of £18,000. If they were to release it as a mobile app, the profit would be considerably less.

Same reason why Apple only make their software for their hardware. Just like Nintendo.

This game really takes me back....

However, you are correct. Nintendo is a hardware company and they will squeeze out more revenue from selling a few 3DS's with some games than even a thousand 0.99 cent apps. Sad we can't have the best of both worlds.

FYI, it supports MFi controllers, and is just like playing it on a handheld console. Very nice.

Then I guess it's in the same boat as the Xbox and Sony lines.

Free to play has a place in "real" gaming, just look at Team Fortress 2 and DOTA. There are interesting new money making schemes in games, there will be many more to come. Nintendo software sales (and 3DS) are great, so I don't see them dropping their "full price and no nickle+diming DLC" current system, but it makes total sense to approach other systems.

And that’s only for two years. Sony and MS make losses for much longer on every console release (the XBox 36 has been on the market for what, 5-6 years?) and nobody worries there. Software still is a big seller and that isn’t changing.

I've always been a Nintendo fan myself and have never picked up a Sonic. Is this a good one? (Not the game in general, but this specific port. IE, a lot of platformers have horrid controls, particularly those that weren't originally made for touch screens.)

There's only two buttons, the D-pad and then the A button. My only problem so far is that they get in the way of the Aquatic Ruin Zone boss, so it's in that moment that you might want to change opacity and location of the controls. Otherwise you can't see the arrows coming from the pillars.

Another thing is that you die more easily when a box barely smashes into you. That was never an issue on my original cart.

Bring on SK&3! :D

Nintendo has always been a toy company, ever since the beginning. If they outsourced their software to other companies, why should anyone buy their toys/consoles?

SEGA doesn't make consoles anymore. Nintendo does, and I like that they actually try to do new things when it comes to hardware. But if they can't get their act together soon with the software, they're going to end up going in SEGA's direction. So... we can expect to see Super Mario iOS sometime in 2017-18 ;)

Nintendo is competing very well in mobile space-they're churning profits. Not as big as Apple, but having a business employing massive amounts of people and churning a profit-in Japan-is something to keep doing.

How many people would get laid off if Nintendo just decided to outsource everything aside from Software Development? Japan can't take another hit like that economically, can it?
