Hi -

I’m looking to purchase a Sonnet for my G4 Cube. So far I’ve only been seeing Sonnet processors without the “C” designator for sale. I’ve read in some other threads that the processor cards are identical, maybe the cube version just came with a different cooling setup (I am assuming a fan, not the big purple heatsink). I just was looking for something definitive or any experiences people have had.

Is anyone able to confirm this, or share experience of using a “standard” 1200/2M 1400/M in a Cube?

The sonnet CPUs sold for towers will work in the Cube. You'll obviously need to remove the heatsink, but it will fit the Cube and also work with the stock copper heat plate (unless it's a dual). I have seen apocryphal reports that the Cube versions are set for lower power. I doubt anyone has actually measured a difference and shared the results.

I have been far away from the cube more than 10 years.. but what I remember is..

If you want to use Sonnet (whatever version), you need to upgrade VRM and add cooler.
Especially Sonnet 1.4 Dual (?) required new VRM as I remember.

Following is upgraded VRM from Japan ( don't remember well. Bought 12~14 years ago)

To enhance speed and air flow, SSD used

To put heat out, small and quiet blower added.

You can't just plonk desktop processors in because they need a certain amount of headroom and the Cube requires a sufficiently flat profile including the heatsink to fit. Mine is a Gigadesign 1.4-1.7GHz single processor with a custom heatsink and fan for the Cube. You only need a beefed up VRM if you are going to put a dual processor upgrade card in. Mine is quite happy with the stock VRM. You will also need to add a fan (usually included with the processor card kit). I can't remember whether my kit came with a firmware/software patcher as well. That might be an issue if you are going to try to adapt a desktop card to fit. Others have tried that with stability issues.
