I ran into an issue after upgrading a macOS Sonoma version and I’m trying to confirm whether others see the same behavior.
My entire home directory (/Users/...) is located on an external drive, which used to work fine in earlier versions.
Since an upgrade, I’ve noticed that iCloud Drive no longer behaves correctly. Bird has a proccessor use of 0.0%
Files fail to sync.
From what I can think, this might be related to Apple’s File Provider-based system for iCloud.
Users on the internal drive appear to be okay with iCloud, but external drive located users not. However, I haven’t found clear documentation stating this is a strict requirement.
So I’m unsure: is this a new intentional limitation in Sonoma, or just a side effect of the newer architecture?
Has external home directory support effectively become unsupported for iCloud features? Do we need to buy bigger internal drives?
If others have encountered this, I’d like to know whether this is expected behavior or a misconfiguration on my side.
Also, are there any reliable workarounds besides moving the home directory back to the internal disk? Because this is bad very bad. And what about newer OS versions? Same behaviour?
