Hello, currently running Monterey on my MacBook Pro 2018 i5, 16 Gb RAM. Would upgrading to Sonoma have any major performance issues? I held off with Ventura since it had some problems last time I read a year ago... Im mostly webbrowsing watching movies etc.
Should I stick with Monterey or upgrade to any of the newer versions? Don't really want to have any performance issues or higher temp comp.

Sonoma runs fine on these, you won’t notice any performance difference.

Sleep seems to be an issue though. Performance seems fine but with clamshell closed it just won’t sleep so battery drains a little faster. No problems in earlier versions of macOS.

This is all but certainly something specific to your computer.

Perhaps this app might help find your issue: https://ohanaware.com/sleepaid/
result of sleep aid - no idea what this is - suggest when hover over the orange line that the keyboard woke up for maintenance - the only keyboard I use is the internal one of the MacBook....

any ideas?

This looks to be "Power Nap" where the computer wakes periodically, and briefly, to check for updates and such.

What is Power Nap on Mac? - Apple Support
You can turn this off on Intel Macs, but not on Apple Silicon Macs.
