Hello,

because it's unclear whether that problem has been fixed in previous macOS versions or not: I'm curious if it's (still) expected behavior for Sonoma to reindex Macintosh HD after each reboot, and similarly, to reindex my external Time Machine SSD every time it's plugged in?

Thank you,
learjet

Are you talking about a full reindexing, or just updates upon reboot? There's a big difference.

Updates upon reboot I guess, duration circa 5 mins. Is that expected behavior?

Plugging in my Time Machine SSD is different, though - reindexing lasts 20-30mins. Every time.

I've always loathed spotlight and disable it immediately with any new Mac or OS version.

I'm using 14.5 on an external SSD and can't tell if spotlight is fully disabled or not.

The following won't SOLVE your problem, but may "deal with it" some.

Keep this terminal command handy:
sudo mdutil -a -i off
(this STOPS spotlight from indexing)

As soon as you get to the finder, open terminal and paste it in.
Hit return.
Your password will be required (you won't see it as you type it).
Then hit return again and watch what terminal reports.
Then, quit terminal.

5 minutes is normal, a full reindex for me will take about a week, though that obviously depends on the amount of files you have on your drive.

Do you share your TM disk with other Macs? That's the only time I experience spotlight running for a while on the TM drive.
