That's really interesting - updating to Sequoia fixed this issue for me, my disks now mount without any issue. Sorry, not helpful, just a "wow, that's really weird."

Yeah it is weird. I have heard some get this when they update and have to wait next update get it solved. It looks like now it my turn have this issue.
No I haven't tried recovery mode yet. Ah yeah I do have other very old Mac to try. I will try to plug in tomorrow to make sure desktop external hard drive is defo functional and that it didn't unexpectedly die same time as update. It is bit late now evening here.
I have just tried it on my old Mac and it works perfectly. Took ages since I got it all wired up at back and hard get it out and in. Now I just put it all back and suddenly it decided to work again! No idea why but happy it working again for whatever reason is. No need do recovery mode after all.

Glad you got it connected and it's working again on your good setup. Now just don't reboot 😛 Seriously since Sonoma I have no idea what Apple is doing with external drives. Even today for me they take forever to mount on a restart - and even then sometimes I have to manually mount them.

I have seen others have issues with external drives and mostly after update but I been lucky so far never affected me until now. Makes me wonder Apple don’t use external drive themselves cos they don’t seem to test it before release update.
That is annoying take while mount after restart (so far I haven’t have that problem thankfully and hope stays that way).
Mac do take ages to mount my NAS. First time always fail and have to reconnect 2nd time and always works. Wished it works 1st time though.
