Id never buy another Sonos product again.

For the love of God…

I've had to go back to using the MacOS Sonos app to get my Sonos speakers to play anything. The iOS app is junk.

But trust why? Because they changed the UI? Isn't that part of a product evolution (if for the better)?
Since nobody really ever answered your question... Trust is gone because they rushed out the new app so they could release their new headphones. The app was far from a complete product and broke several of the features of Sonos that are big reasons for buying into their system in the first place (like your music library on your NAS server, sleep timers and alarms, adding speakers to your system and grouping them, etc). When confronted about it and also pressed to revert back to the previous version, they basically doubled down and said this is how it will be and they will bring features back in the coming months. Since you say you don't really use the app and just opened the latest version, you missed all of that and the app is mostly back in working order again. But the damage has been done and they have proven that they don't listen to customers wants and needs, so they've lost the trust of their customer base.

But just to remind you, that’s not the first time. They previously bricked devices if you refused them spying on your home in the new privacy policy. They also abandoned older models with the new app for zero technical reason, just to force upgrades. They then offered to brick and landfill old devices in exchange for a small discount on new stuff (with microphones for spying).

Company is evil, let them die.

If the "abandoned older models" you speak of is referring to the S1 to S2 upgrade, that was long before this botched app update. Any ill feelings from that era pale in comparison by multitudes to the latest app debacle.

Well that was when I decided they could poke it so maybe this is worse but it’s definitely not the start of their issues or decline. Those that stayed deserve what they got, the signs were there.

Sorry to ask but maybe I'm not really a big user of their app — I have a Sonos Beam 2 for like a year and been using with airplay + TV speaker and quite enjoy it, with no issues at all. I only use their app to check sometimes if some movie is using Atmos or not, but for nothing else.

Why is people complaining lately about their app? Just opened it now and yes, I remember the old UI but this new UI doesn't seem bad as well. Or is some functionality that is broken? (again, I don't use it other than for checking the output sound type).
I have a Sonos av amp hooked to Sonance in walls sold as a set by Best Buy. Works for me the same way. I haven’t used the app (old version) since the day of setup either.

I know their app is having problems today, but their speakers generally have been pretty decent. I've got a bunch of Ones, and a soundbar that generally have been set it and forget it, like you should for any speaker, and use airplay or HDMI all the rest without need to reboot. Very consistent if network conditions are stable, and would recommend Ones over Homepods or Echos.

Key word however was 'set'. The old app in combination with setting up speakers from scratch again (changing pairing) was a pain. How many times do I need to hard reset a device so it is discoverable again? Once past that point, attempt to join a network would fail during the wizard was a frustration for a few hours.
I moved and haven’t set mine up yet since the app fiasco I’m curious how bad it is. Is the bad press overblown or is my entire Sonos system going to be unusable when I fire it up?

They rolled back the disastrous app. You should be fine.

I looked into Sonos after trying two HomePods for my living room sound. The HomePods were terrible compared to a Sonos beam. I have since bought an arc, 2 subs, and 2 amps with Sonance ceiling speakers. I also just picked up a Sonos ray for $100 off this past weekend at Best Buy and I consider it a steal. All Sonos speakers sound absolutely amazing and fill a gap that Apple only wishes their HomePods could. Although the new app was released too soon I think the blowback has been way overblown. Just depends on what you are exactly needing from the app. My recent setup of the Sonos ray was ridiculously easy. When the app works well it provides an Apple-like user experience setup of hardware. I have no doubt they will iron out issues in time although I recognize they made decisions that weren’t in the best interest of their current customers. We do rely on Sonos to keep the ship running so the hardware we buy today works for a long time. I know what I was in for when I purchased Sonos products. I have no regrets and hope they continue making great products for years to come.

Echoing your overall positive experience. I am sitting here as I type enjoying a beautiful rich-sounding Sonos Arc setup with a Gen 2 subwoofer and Era 100 speakers for surround, and I am having absolutely no regrets. I am a longtime Sonos customer and intend to continue to support them. I love their simplicity and their sound quality. I am sorry to hear others have had difficulty.

Annoyingly I've stopped listening to music thanks to Sonos. I have a house full of the stuff and just find it too hard to contemplate at the moment. Hopefully it will get sorted. Along the way I even reset my unifi system to rid it of the configuration changes I made to it to get Sonos happy but then it all stopped again.

i have a full home cinema setup + extra speakers from sonos. The way they messed it up with their new app and impossibility to roll back in iOS made me lose complete trust. Their fake response saying they cannot themselves roll back to the previous version also increases that feeling of lack of trust. They are one firmware away from bricking my devices so no thank you, never buying a Sonos product ever again

Most recently it was because they removed a clause promising not to ever sell any personal information about their users. Which is pretty key for a company trying to put mics in every room your house.

Turns out it was a necessary change to comply with California law about how those statements are written. But that explanation wasn’t shared upfront and made lots of users very upset, as it was a perceived fundamental change in the user agreement, made to devices that we own outright at fairly substantial expense (we’re paying, in part, NOT to be the product).

And the fact that that decision came after releasing a “major update” that removed queue editing and resetting, alarms, and equalizer tuning, while also removing most users’ ability to use the True Play feature.

That’s what people are upset about. The CEO has shared a really after-the-fact letter admitting things have been pretty poorly done and committing to a timeline of improvements. In the meantime, I’d say the app works like 40% of the time for the most basic task of playing music to a speaker.

They launched what looked like any of a thousand routine app updates that came before it, but turned out to be a radical re-design that diminished or in some cases completely removed features that some people (like me) used daily and were what inspired me to buy a houseful of their products. It demonstrated two things: that I’m beholden to the company to maintain my user experience, and that they are not committed to preserving the feature set that enticed me to buy. I should add that it’s not the first time they’ve removed features, but for me it’s the worst so far.

For people that were not heavily reliant on the features of the app that were removed it’s not a big deal, and the speakers do still sound great, but for a lot of people it was a sort of kick in the teeth. I use the app mostly for playing music from my own extensive music library, and that function is kind of a disaster now.

I said "buy". Not sure if you know what that means.
Well aware of what buy means. I just undated two of my Sonos products. Do you understand what a question is? I asked a question with a ? and a qualification. Challenging your seriousness the reality. Most all talk and end of day order more Sonos products.
